Commentary
Then he commanded them with what is appropriate for every commander regarding good, taking the best and then the best, and the easiest and then the easiest. He said, explaining the conclusion to it and commenting: "So say to him a gentle word" so that he does not have a proof against him, nor accept an excuse from him, "perhaps he may remember" what has passed for him from the development of Allah [for him] in various stages, and carrying him in what he dislikes to what he cannot escape from by a trick, so he knows by that that Allah is his Lord, and that He is capable of what He wants from him, so he turns away from his misguidance and believes, "or fears" meaning or reaches the state of one who fears the consequence of your words due to the assumption of truth. [So your words would be a reminder for him -] so he sends with you the Children of Israel. The meaning of hoping is that his state is the state of one from whom that is hoped, because it is from the fruit of gentleness in الدعاء. The speech in this and similar matters has proceeded according to what the servants are accustomed to in their discussions, and the Qur'an has come in their language and according to what they mean. So the intended meaning is: both of you go with your hopes and your desires and your level of knowledge, and they do not have more than this unless they know. As for His knowledge, glorified and exalted is He, it has come from beyond what is to be - this was said by Sibawayh in the chapter of the indefinite, which runs parallel to what contains the definite article in the sources and names.
