And when it was - for what has preceded - in the ruling of the forgotten among most people, he said: ﴿So let it not turn you away from it﴾ meaning the continuity of its mention to yield the striving in preparation for it ﴿who does not believe in it﴾ by his turning away from it and his urging others to do so by beautifying what he has been given of the possessions that lead to boasting and pride, for indeed, whoever turns away from that is not far in state from one who denies it. The intended meaning of the phrase is the prohibition of Musa, blessings and peace be upon him, from denial, so he expressed it by prohibiting the one who does not believe from turning away, in honor of Musa, blessings and peace be upon him, and because the turning away of the disbeliever from belief is a cause for denial, so he mentioned the cause to indicate the effect. And because the turning away of the disbeliever is caused by the weakness of the man in religion and the softness of his resolve, he mentioned the cause to indicate the effect. It is as if it was said: Be strong in resolve, firm in your stance, so that no one may hope to turn you away even if the turners away are a great multitude, for indeed, their multitude reaches desire, not proof. And in this is a great encouragement to act upon evidence, and a strong warning against imitation, and a warning that destruction and ruin are with imitation and its people, which the commentator has pointed out. Then he clarified the reason for the denial of it and the laziness about striving for it by saying: ﴿And he followed﴾ meaning with all his effort ﴿his desire﴾ so his state was like that of the animals that have no intellect, repelling from a state like his; then he emphasized the warning by saying [causing -]: ﴿So he will fall﴾ meaning he will perish, indicating that whoever neglects vigilance for a moment has deviated from the evidence, and whoever deviates from the evidence has perished.
