Commentary
And when he knew that their faith was like that which is impossible, and their argument does not cease, rather if guidance comes to them, they would attack it, and if they were punished before it, they would complain, it was as if it was said: So what should I do with them? He said: "Say, all of us" meaning from me and from you, "are waiting" meaning expecting a good outcome of his affair and the cycles of time against his enemy. "So wait" for you are like animals, you have no contemplation, nor do you allow what is permissible except at the time of its occurrence. "So you will soon know" meaning soon by a promise that there is no contradiction in it at the unveiling of the veil, "who are the companions of the straight path" [meaning the clear and wide path] "the upright" meaning that in which there is no deviation or distortion, for it is of its nature to lead to the goals.
And when the owner of a thing may not be knowledgeable of the thing nor act upon what he knows of it, he said: "And whoever is guided" meaning from misguidance, thus he has obtained all that benefits him and avoided all that harms him, are we or you? And they certainly knew that on the day of the conquest of the honored Mecca, and their joy in Islam intensified, and they entered out of desire for forbearance and generosity, and fear from the sword and retribution. And after that, they would marvel at their hesitation from it and their aversion to it. And this means that he, blessings and peace be upon him, and those who followed him are the happy, rich, and content in this world and the Hereafter. And this is the essence of His saying, glorified and exalted is He: "We did not send down the Qur'an upon you to cause you distress" [Ta-Ha: 2]. Thus, the latter applies to the former, and it indicates that the great one deals with forbearance and does not hasten - and Allah knows best.
