Commentary
And when it became clear by that that they are attacking with what there is no doubt for them in it at all, he followed it with what they had a type of doubt in, if it were to occur. He said, adding to it, "And if it were not for a word" [Taha: 129] "And if We had destroyed them" as a treatment for them in their disobedience by what the station of greatness necessitates, "with a punishment before it" meaning before this mentioned Qur'an in the previous verse (p-376) and what is similar to it. And in His saying, "And do not hasten with the Qur'an" [Taha: 114] it is explicit, and likewise in the structure of the surah, "We did not send down to you the Qur'an that you be distressed" [Taha: 2]. They would say on the Day of Resurrection: "Our Lord" O He who is characterized by kindness towards us, "If only" meaning why not, "You had sent" and they indicated His greatness and high rank with the particle of purpose, so they said: "To us a messenger" meaning to command us with Your obedience, "so we may follow" meaning it would result in us following "Your signs" which he brings to us.
And when their following does not encompass the time before, they said: "Before we are humiliated" with this humiliation of punishment, "and we are disgraced" with the sins we committed out of ignorance, this disgrace. For that reason, We sent you to them and established with you a proof against them, and We are being kind to them, and We uncover from the hearts of whom We will among them what is upon them of the rust by what We send down of the reminder and renew from the signs until we affirm Your command and elevate Your status [and increase Your followers-] and support Your allies.
