Commentary

And when what has passed of this surah and what preceded it mentioned the fates of the ancients, and the stories of the deniers, due to their disobedience to the messengers, is a great reason for insight and clarification, they were deserving of being reproached for their adherence to their blindness. So Allah, the Most High, said: ﴿Did they not receive guidance﴾ meaning to clarify ﴿to them how many We have destroyed before them﴾ meaning the multitude of Our destruction of those who preceded them ﴿from the nations﴾ for their denial of Our messengers, while they ﴿were walking in their dwellings﴾ and they knew their news through inheritance from predecessors that We support Our allies and destroy Our enemies and do what We will! And it is better that no action is specified, and the meaning is: Did the guiding clarification not occur to them, and what follows it is an outright continuation just as the clarification occurred with His saying as a continuation: ﴿Indeed, in that﴾ meaning the great destruction of significant matter that continues in every nation ﴿are signs﴾ of great clarity ﴿for those of understanding﴾ meaning the intellects that are meant to refrain from what does not benefit, let alone what harms, for they indicate through their continuity the ability of the doer, and by specifying the disbeliever with destruction and the believer with salvation, regarding complete knowledge [with] the universality of ability, and that He, the Most High, does not allow corruption even if He gives respite - to others who have a deterrent from their reason.
