Commentary
So they both ate. This means that they caused themselves to eat by their saying and followed what he said, forgetting what had been commanded to them. Then it became apparent to them what they had uncovered from the veil of prohibition and its sanctity. Their private parts became exposed due to what they had been warned against, which was their removal from what they were in. And they both began to sew, meaning they started to stitch or attach upon themselves from the leaves of Paradise to cover their nakedness. And Adam disobeyed, even though he only did so out of forgetfulness. The greatness of his status and the high rank he held required him to have more care and constant vigilance, along with a steady heart and alert thought towards his Lord, who is the Benefactor to him. He did not grant anyone among his descendants the honor of shaping him with His hand and prostrating His angels to him and opposing whom he opposed. So he was led astray, meaning he fell into error, and thus they said: the meaning is that he strayed from the path of righteousness and missed the way to eternity by opposing His command, while he is His chosen one. This did not lower him from the rank of selection, for His mercy is vast, His forbearance is great, and His forgiveness is comprehensive. So do not let the matter of the obstinate people concern you, for We are capable of turning the hearts of whomever We wish among them and making them among the purest of the chosen ones. And We can bring forth from the loins of whomever We wish among them one whose heart is a source of wisdom and knowledge.
