Commentary
And when these phrases reached the end of the miraculous, they encompassed the utmost wisdom. They indicate that the one who says them possesses complete knowledge, power, and justice in the affairs of both worlds. The result of their conveyance is that it became evident to him from the greatness what his words conveyed, magnifying himself, the Most Sacred, with what He is worthy of, after magnifying His Book, teaching His servants what is due to Him of the truth. Indicating by the form of interaction a greater exaltation: ﴿So exalted is Allah﴾ meaning the One who cannot be described by the describers in a manner that truly describes Him from exaltation, a matter that minds cannot bear. Nothing of the blasphemy of the blasphemers or the description of the polytheists can reach Him. ﴿The King﴾ who is not made incapable by anything, so there is no king in reality other than Him. ﴿The Truth﴾ meaning the established ownership, so there is no cessation of His being a king at any time. Due to the greatness of His kingship and the truth of His essence and attributes, He directed His creation according to what they are upon of differing matters. And when these verses were in condemnation of those who turned away from this reminder, the implication was: So do not turn away from it, rather turn towards it, to be among the righteous who remember. And when this great encouragement perhaps necessitated for the one who excels in piety to hasten towards it, he may rush to receive it before completing its revelation, He said, adding to this implication: ﴿And do not hasten with the Qur'an﴾ meaning with its recitation. And when the prohibition was general for all previous times, it indicated this by the preposition so that it would not be thought to be specific to what encompasses the time before in one instance. He said: ﴿Before﴾ And when the consideration here is towards the completion of the revelation, not to a specific revealer, He built for the unknown His saying: ﴿It is concluded﴾ meaning it is finished ﴿to you is His revelation﴾ from the angel descending to you from Our presence with it, just as We did not hasten to send it down to you all at once, rather We arranged it for you in a measured manner, and We sent it down to you in a detailed manner, and connected it in a connected manner - as We indicated at the beginning of the surah. So listen to it, giving all your contemplation to it, and do not rush it with reading. And when you have finished, then read it, for We gather it in your heart and do not make you forget it while you are listening to it, nor by your obligation to rush it with its recitation. ﴿And say, My Lord﴾ meaning the One who bestows upon me by imparting knowledge to me ﴿Increase me in knowledge﴾ meaning by making clear what You have sent down to me of it and sending down others just as You increased me by sending it down and preserving it, so that you may be able to know the beneficial causes for the creation's submission to You. For as previously mentioned, to the extent of encompassing knowledge will be the extent of power. And in this is evidence that being deliberate in knowledge through contemplation and listening is more beneficial than the exhausting haste that disturbs the mind and the state, and it aids in preservation. For whoever comprehends something with true comprehension preserves it to the utmost preservation. And it was narrated by Al-Tirmidhi, Ibn Majah, and Al-Bazzar from Abu Huraira, may Allah be pleased with him, who said: The Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, used to say:
'O Allah, benefit me by what You have taught me, and teach me what benefits me, and increase me in knowledge. Praise is to Allah in every situation, and I seek refuge with Allah from the state of the people of the Fire.' This was reported by Ibn Kathir in his tafsir.
