Commentary
And when He, glorified and exalted is He, informed of the removal of any deviation in the sound, He said: ﴿On that Day﴾ meaning when the trumpet is blown and the mountains are crushed ﴿They will follow﴾ meaning the people of the gathering [with the utmost of their effort -] ﴿the caller﴾ meaning by the blowing, standing upright towards him in straightness ﴿There is no deviation in it﴾ meaning the caller in anything of their intention towards him, (p-347) because there is nothing on earth that requires them to divert nor does it prevent the sound from penetrating equally; and Abu Hayyan said: meaning there is no deviation in his call, rather he will make all of them hear, so he does not incline towards some people over others.
And when He informed of their humility in the speech and their submission to the call, He informed of the humility of other sounds that customarily are associated with gathering, and He said: ﴿And the voices will be humbled﴾ meaning they will become relaxed and subdued and [lowered and -] will be calmed due to the humility of their people ﴿to the Most Merciful﴾ meaning [the One -] whose blessings are widespread, so His generosity is hoped for, and His wrath is feared ﴿So﴾ meaning it will result from their relaxation that ﴿you will hear nothing but a whisper﴾ the most concealed of sounds, [and it is said: the most concealed thing of the sounds of footsteps -].
