Commentary
And when the knowledge of what is to come is more concealed than the knowledge of what has passed, He came in a manifestation of greatness and said: "We know" more than anyone else "what they say" meaning on that day "when the best of them in method" in the world according to what they think, [meaning the closest to having his method be like what is required of him -]: "Indeed" [meaning what -] "you remained" [and it indicated that the counted omitted from the first is the days by His saying -]: "except for a day" meaning the beginning of the singular days, not the beginning of the contracts as He said in another verse: "They said: We remained a day or part of a day" [Al-Mu'minun: 113] "The criminals will swear they did not remain except for an hour" [Ar-Rum: 55] So they will continue in deception and diversion from the truth in both abodes, because a person dies upon what he lived by, and he is resurrected upon what he died upon. And it is possible that what is meant is [that -] whoever said: Indeed, their staying is one day, is the best of them in the matter itself, because time, even if it is long, is merely a repeated day, not intended for itself, but rather intended for what will be in it. If it is good, its owner is praised [and -] the shortness does not harm him, and if it is evil, it is blameworthy and the length does not benefit him. [And it is possible that the first was intended for the nights, as they are the place of rest intended specifically, so it was as if they said: We had no rest except for a very short time more than the beginning of the contracts. And the best indicated on the day in which effort is made for rest at night is a reference to the fact that they had no rest in their staying in the world at all, and their striving was nothing but toil, just as striving is on a day where there is no night to rest in. And if there is rest in it, it is incidental, not original -].
