Commentary
﴿They whisper to one another﴾. And when whispering - which is conversing quietly - may occur between two from different tribes, each of them would be fearful of their people less disgracefully than if they were from one tribe. This is because it indicates that such fear is an inherent nature. He said, indicating its necessity and generality: ﴿Among them﴾, meaning they speak with lowered voices out of awe and fear. And since blue is the most disliked color of eyes to the Arabs [due to their unfamiliarity with it -], and whispering is the most disliked sound to them because it indicates among them low ambition and cowardice [and they were more averse to blue because whispering may be associated with a purpose. He arranged them, glorified is He, in this way -], then He clarified what they whisper about, saying: (p-343) ﴿Indeed﴾, meaning some of them say to one another: What ﴿have you remained﴾, meaning in the world [shortening the duration of their stay in the absence of what appeared to them of fears, or mistakenly and in astonishment -] ﴿except for ten﴾, meaning one decade, not exceeding the units except by one, and it is [if it were years -] the age of one who has not yet reached puberty. [So how if it were months or days -] they did not recognize the pleasure of living in any estimation.
