Tafsir for verse: 2:96
96You shall surely find them the more avid, for life than all other men - even more than the polytheists. Every one of them would love that his life is prolonged for one thousand years. But it will not take him away from punishment that his life is (so) prolonged, and Allah is watchful of what they do.

Commentary

And when He clarified that they do not wish for it, He established for them what is above that, from wishing for the opposite, which indicates their knowledge of the evil of their outcome. He said: ﴿And you will surely find them﴾ meaning: by what you know of their conditions, from which there is feeling, which is the inner awareness of what one is in, and also the hitting of what has a connection to the inner self, as if it is in it: ﴿more eager﴾ is a form of exaggeration from eagerness. This is the request for immersion in what pertains to it, as stated by al-Harali.

﴿The people are upon a life﴾ upon whatever state it may be, and they are certain that no day is free from it of distress. For they know that even if it is in the utmost distress, it is better for them than what comes after death. ﴿And more eager than﴾ meaning: and more eager than ﴿those who associated partners﴾ those who have no resurrection in their knowledge that they are heading to eternal punishment due to the encompassing sins and associating partners. Al-Harali said: attributing the matter that is specific to one to one who has no matter with him, has ended.

Then He clarified the extent of what they wish for, saying: ﴿They wish﴾ from al-wudd, which is the sound inclination of the soul towards the deserving thing, its inclination towards it, as stated by al-Harali.

﴿One of them﴾ meaning: one of those who preceded from the Jews and the polytheists of all their kinds, or from the Jews specifically, or from the polytheists, so the affection of the Jews is primarily. Al-Harali said: it is similar to the address of the Qur'an that the conveying of creation does not reach.

﴿If he were to live﴾ from al-ta'mir, which is the prolongation of life, as if it is a repetition, and life is the duration between the beginning of a thing and its end, as stated by al-Harali.

﴿A thousand years﴾ out of fear of death or what comes after it. A thousand is the completion of the number with the completion of the third rank; and the year is the duration of the completion of the solar cycle and the completion of twelve lunar cycles, as stated by al-Harali. This meaning, although present in the year and the annual cycle, is different, but the source of the derivation is considered in the whole. For the eloquence of the Qur'an does not allow any of these terms to be used except in what is appropriate to the context from the original derivation of these terms. This context, when it was intended to blame them for their recklessness in their remaining in this world, whatever state it may be, with their knowledge that it, even if it is the worst of conditions, is better for them than what comes after death, due to the realization of their misery, He expressed it with what is of drought and the evil of time, or what is of the cycle that involves toil and labor if its origin is from the sun that revolves when it goes around the well. Al-Suhayli said in al-Rawd: and the year may be called a cycle; for in the report: between Adam and Noah is a thousand cycles; meaning: years. Then he said: so contemplate this, for knowledge of the descent of the speech and placing the words in their appropriate places opens a door of knowledge regarding the miracle of the Qur'an, and Allah is the One sought for help.

﴿And what is﴾ meaning: his prolongation,

﴿not able to remove him﴾ and al-zahzaha is the distancing of the heavy thing that is sprawling from what is far from it, as stated by al-Harali.

﴿From the punishment﴾ (p-64) means: a removal that begins from the punishment. He expressed it with 'from' to indicate that they do not separate from the punishment in this world or the Hereafter, even if they do not feel it in this world. Then he explained the pronoun by saying: ﴿that he may be granted a long life﴾. It is only the obedience that is accompanied by true faith, in which there is no division, that removes him. And since the implication is that they are engaged in evil deeds throughout their lives, he added his saying: ﴿And Allah﴾, to whom belongs all command, ﴿is All-Aware of what they do﴾.
