Commentary
And when He, glorified and exalted is He, established the proof of their deserving to remain in the Fire due to their disbelief in the Book which they used to seek victory by its coming, He established another proof for that which is clearer than it. That is due to their disbelief in their own Book itself. He said: ﴿And when it is said to them﴾ meaning: these are the ones who have broken the covenants of their Book, ﴿Believe in what Allah has sent down﴾ meaning: the King to whom belongs all command absolutely, and in general concerning the Books and the Scriptures.
And when He raised their status by calling them to believe in what is attributed to this Greatest Name, ﴿They said﴾ belittling themselves, ﴿We believe in what has been sent down to us﴾ so they dropped the name of the one who is honored by His mention and blessed by His name, and they specified some of what He sent down. Then He was astonished by their claim, saying: ﴿And they disbelieve﴾ meaning: they said that while they disbelieve ﴿in what is beyond it﴾ meaning: beyond what has been sent down to them of what Allah sent down to His messengers. This includes what was before the Torah and what was after it, because 'beyond' can mean sometimes behind and sometimes in front. So if you say: Zayd is behind me, it is correct that it is meant in the place that I conceal in relation to those behind me, and it can be meant in the place that is hidden from me, so it is behind me. And al-Harali said: 'beyond' refers to what cannot be perceived by the senses or knowledge, wherever it may be from the place. Perhaps it may be that something is beyond in the sense that it is unknown and may also be in front in the place.
﴿And He﴾ meaning: while the case is that what is beyond it is: ﴿the truth﴾ that reaches its utmost limits by what is indicated by 'the'. Al-Harali said: it is concluded to the ultimate truth by the word 'the', because what is established and has no removal for its conclusion is: 'the truth', and what is established for a time and then is followed by completion or accepts addition is merely 'truth' in the indefinite form. For indeed, there is a great difference in meaning between the definite by the word 'the' and the indefinite.
﴿Confirming what is with them﴾ it is established that they are disbelievers in what they have. This is because the one who denies the confirmer of something is a denier of that thing. Then he unveiled the veil of their statement with a clearer refutation, saying: ﴿Say, then why﴾ meaning: what has caused your claims to lead to the question being asked of you: why ﴿do you kill the prophets of Allah﴾ the Greatest King, while your Book prohibits outright killing? So how about killing the prophets! Then he clarified that their disbelief in this killing is indeed through their approval of the killing of their forefathers by his saying, affirming the connection, for that was from them in some past times: ﴿before﴾. And in the present tense form, there is a depiction of the heinousness of this killing in that terrible state, and a symbol that if they were able now, they would do their action. For the estimation is: and you insist on killing them afterward; and therein is an indication of their eagerness to kill the Prophet ﷺ as a warning from them. And this indication has proven true, for the Banu Nadir had resolved to throw a stone at him, and the people of Khaybar had poisoned him. Then he presented the essence of their claim with a tool of doubt, saying: ﴿If you are believers﴾ indicating that such a thing (﴿does not come from one who is dressed in faith﴾).
