Commentary

(p-14) And when these verses are all like evidence for His saying, the Exalted: "And humiliation and poverty were put upon them" - "That is because they used to disbelieve in the signs of Allah". Thus, the meaning of that is His saying, the Exalted: ﴿Those﴾, meaning: the distant, the hated,

﴿Who have purchased﴾, meaning: they persisted and took,

﴿the worldly life﴾ with its baseness,

﴿in exchange for the Hereafter﴾ with its nobility. The worldly life is derived from [dunū], which means the lower in rank, in contrast to [‘ulā], and because it is associated with the immediate, it has become in contrast to the other that is necessary for exaltation. In the worldly life, there is a descent in worth and hastiness, while in the Hereafter, there is an exaltation in worth and delay. Thus, they are contrasted in what can be understood as two opposites from the meaning of each one of them. This was said by al-Haralī. [So the verse is from the interaction; mentioning the worldly life first indicates the omission of the exalted second, and mentioning the Hereafter second indicates the omission of the immediate first].

﴿So﴾, meaning: it resulted from that that there is no ﴿relief﴾ from the relief, which is (p-15) the fate of the heavy and the lowly to the state of the floating and the exalted, like the state between the stone and the air, as al-Haralī said.

﴿From them the punishment﴾ in one of the two abodes,

﴿And they will not be aided﴾, and this is also one of the greatest evidences for the abandonment of those who invade for the sake of gain or who steal. It has been reported in many hadiths and narrations that explicitly state this, including what Malik narrated from Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with both of them, that the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, said: "Whenever theft appears among a people, Allah casts terror into their hearts." This is also an ancient law; in the Book of Joshua, peace be upon him, it is mentioned that when he conquered the city of Jericho after the death of Moses, peace be upon him, he sent three thousand fighters to conquer the city of Ai. The people of Ai killed a group of them and defeated them, causing their hearts to tremble and become like water. So Joshua prostrated on the ground before the Ark of the Lord, he and the elders of the Children of Israel. The Lord said to him: "Stand up!" and informed him that his people had stolen, so they would not be able to stand against their enemies until they removed the forbidden from them. And Allah said to him: "And when tomorrow comes, present your tribes to cast lots. The tribe that the lot of the Lord falls upon will advance its clans, and the clan that the lot falls upon will advance its houses, and the house that the lot of the Lord falls upon and the forbidden is found with it will be burned with fire, he and all that belongs to him, because he has transgressed against the command of the Lord and because he has sinned in Israel." So he did what the Lord commanded him, and the lot fell upon Achan, son of Carmi, from the tribe of Judah. He brought him, his sons, his daughters, his livestock, his tent, and all that he had, and they brought them to the Valley of Achor. All the Children of Israel stoned them with stones and burned them with fire, and they made a heap of large stones over him to this day. Therefore, that place has been called the Valley of Achor to this day. Then they came the next day to Ai and killed all who were in it from the male and female descendants of Adam and burned it.
