And when the greatest of the major sins after shirk is killing, He followed it by reminding them of what He took from them in the covenant. He associated with it the expulsion from the homes because wealth is equivalent to the soul, and the home is the greatest wealth. It is to the body as the body is to the soul. So He said: "And when We took your covenant, O Children of Israel, that you do not shed each other's blood," meaning: let not some of you shed the blood of others, "and do not expel yourselves," by expelling some of you for others; for those who are connected by lineage or religion are like one soul.
