Commentary
They said, 'Call upon your Lord for us.' The One who is good to you by answering in all that you have asked Him. 'Clarify to us what it is.' Then they justified their repetition of that by saying, 'Indeed, the cow,' meaning the one described by what I have mentioned. 'It has become similar to us.' And he mentioned the action because every plural has its letters fewer than the letters of its singular. For the Arabs refer to it as such. It has been reported from Sibawayh. Then care reached them, so they said, 'And we, if Allah wills,' meaning the One who has the attributes of perfection. They emphasized this when their stopping became necessary due to their suspicion of obstinacy. They preceded the seeking of blessings with the will for that over the news of 'Indeed, we will be guided,' meaning to what is intended. So they sought blessings with what there is no blessing except through it.
