Commentary
'They said, 'Call upon your Lord for us'' is a continuation of their stubbornness by not acknowledging the kindness. 'Let Him clarify to us what its color is' after clarifying its age. The color is the manifestation of the appearance of things to the eye - this was said by al-Harali. 'He said' and confirmed what had passed of their obstinacy, so he said, 'Indeed, He says' [Al-Baqarah: 68]. He emphasized an indication of their further obstinacy by saying, 'Indeed, it is a cow that is yellow.' He confirmed the intensity of its yellowness by shifting from 'bright' to his expression of the color, 'bright is its color,' meaning pure in its yellowness. Al-Harali said: The description of purifying the color yellow is like that of a pure red; thus it is intermediate in color between black and white, just as it was intermediate in age. 'It pleases the onlookers' means it delights their souls, for when you look at it, it seems to you that the rays of the sun are emanating from its skin - this was said by Wahb.
