Commentary
They said, continuing in their harshness, 'Call upon your Lord for us.' This means the One who is good to you. Their specification of Him by addition is the utmost in rudeness. 'He clarifies' is from the word 'tabeen,' which means to cut off something. The meaning is what is associated with it and enters into it, as said by al-Harali. What is meant is the exaggeration in clarification by what is understood from the form of 'tafa'il.' 'For us, what is that cow?' He said, 'Indeed, He says.' When they were being obstinate, he confirmed and said, 'Indeed, it is a cow that is not old,' meaning it is not aged, having reached its age. 'Nor is it a young heifer,' meaning it is not a small young one. 'A middle-aged one,' meaning it is half, and this is the news of a subject that is omitted. He clarified this news by saying, 'between that,' meaning the age of the old and the young. 'So do what you are commanded,' for indeed, objecting to one who must be submitted to is disbelief. Yet they did not act, but rather asked for clarification of the color after the clarification of the age by saying.
