57And We made the cloud give you shade, and sent down to you Mann and Salwā: “Eat of the good things We have provided to you”. And they (by their ingratitude) did Us no harm, but were harming only themselves.

Commentary

And when the lightning that arises from the clouds was mentioned, it was most appropriate to mention the shading of the clouds. It was suitable to warn against the punishment of burning by lightning and to remind of the blessing of creation from death, following it with the mention of the comfort in preservation from the heat of the sun on the outside and from hunger on the inside.

And Al-Harali said: And Allah, the Exalted, connected the mention of resurrection with the mention of a state similar to that of the people of Paradise, which they will attain after resurrection. It is as if the majority of those who did not die are merely partners with these resurrected ones, as they are as if they died with their death and were resurrected with their resurrection. He mentioned the shade of the clouds, which is from the matters after resurrection, and the provisions without effort, which is from the state after resurrection. He made this clear with other matters regarding their states, as it is said: Their garments would grow longer with them as they grew, so it is as if they were taken out from the states of the people of this world altogether to a semblance of the states of the people of Paradise in their place of ease and deserving of punishment. All of this is a favor upon them. Then they did not increase with that except in distance from the insight into all that was shown to them of wonders - speak of the Children of Israel without hesitation - and He said: "And We shaded you" from the shade, which is a protection from what descends from the sky of the one who protects, and "upon you is the cloud" from the gloom, which covers the light, meaning it covers it. (p-386) It has ended. That is, We did that to refresh your bodies and to soothe your souls. And from Mujahid: The cloud is cooler than the vapor and lighter and purer. "And We sent down upon you the manna" Al-Harali said: It is that which came without effort; the truffle is from the manna. It has ended.

"And the quails" meaning for your food, noting that the manna is from the clouds. And He gathered the quails to them by the stirring wind, arranging them with it in the utmost harmony. Al-Harali said: The quail is the name of a type of bird, it is said to be the samani or otherwise. It has ended. And it will come, if Allah wills, in Al-A'raf that it is not the samani and that they were specifically chosen for it as a sign of the hardness of their hearts.

This miracle, the companions of our Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, were rich enough without it. Whenever the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, needed something, he would pray for what they had of surplus provisions, and Allah would multiply it until they were satisfied from what they had left. "And he gave Abu Huraira, may Allah be pleased with him, some dates and commanded him to put them in a bag and said to him: Spend and do not scatter them. He ate from it for years and spent from it more than fifty measures." And he blessed another with a small amount of barley and commanded him not to measure it. He continued to spend from it on himself, his wife, and his guest until he measured it and it finished. The Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, said: "If you had not measured it, you would have eaten from it, and it would have remained for you." And something similar happened to Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, after the death of the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him. Likewise, for Umm Malik, may Allah be pleased with her, in a jar of ghee, she continued to prepare her food from it until she squeezed it. And there are many such instances in the signs of Prophethood, as reported by Al-Bayhaqi and others. And it was said to you, "Eat," which indicates that it is more than sufficient for them by His saying, "of good things," the plural of good. Al-Harali said: "The good is what is free from a contender that shares in it and is made good from something other than food for him, meaning it has no claim for others, and among it is the good in taste, which does not have any dislike in its flavor. This is in addition to the fact that it was not from the work of cultivation or dealings with creation." End of quote.

"What We have provided you with" means, despite Our greatness that cannot be compared to anything.

And when they did not heed these blessings, He turned away from them to indicate their deserving of wrath. Al-Harali said: "Then He turned away from them in address and directed it to Muhammad, blessings and peace be upon him, and those with him." End of quote. He said, "And what" means they wronged themselves by denying all these blessings, and "they did not wrong Us" in anything of that, "but they were" meaning by nature and disposition, "wronging themselves" specifically, "because the harm of that is confined to them." Al-Harali said: "And in it is an indication of warning these people to see something similar to what they saw, so that they may receive something similar to what they received, for the stories of the Qur'an are not intended solely to mention the former ones, but every story in it is mentioned for what may befall this nation in the duration of their day from the likeness of the conditions of those to whom their stories were narrated." End of quote.
