Commentary

And when their revival from that in the abode is of the utmost distance and breaking of the norm, He expressed it with a tool of delay and a manifestation of greatness, so He said: ﴿Then We raised you up﴾, meaning by what We have of greatness through revival. Al-Harali said: It is from resurrection, which is the stirring from [UNTRANSLATED-LATIN: ghayb] and concealment, the strongest of which is the resurrection from the graves, and less than that is the resurrection from sleep. He said: And the address has surpassed what was the reason for their resurrection. Likewise, every place where 'then' occurs, there is an address that surpasses it, of long duration and many ranks of number, understood by whoever fulfills the purposes of what the word 'then' has occurred between the two connected statements. So in the meaning of the surpassing of the address is the question of Musa, peace be upon him, to his Lord regarding their resurrection, so that it would not be a trial for the rest of them. Ended.

And when it was perhaps thought that the resurrection is from a delusion and the like, He clarified its meaning, indicating that it did not encompass the time of distance by saying: ﴿After your death﴾, meaning this by that striking event. And He indicated that the resurrection to this abode does not cut off what is built upon it from the obligation, for it is the abode of trials, so there must be a purification of secrets in it through deeds and remembrances: ﴿That perhaps you may be grateful﴾, meaning so that your state becomes like that of one whose gratitude for this great blessing is valid. And everything that has come from 'perhaps' that is justified by it are the actions of the Lord, blessed and exalted is He, should be interpreted in this manner. For 'perhaps' implies doubt, as it is for hope and concern, so one hopes for its inclusion and fears that it may not be. Sometimes the doubt is for the addressed and sometimes it is for the speaker. And if it were said: 'So that you may be grateful,' there would be no doubt - this was said by Al-Rummani in the Surah of Yusuf, peace be upon him.

And Al-Harali said: And in 'perhaps' there is an ambiguity of its known in them, that among them are those who will be grateful and among them are those who will not be grateful. Ended. And it will come in the Surah of 'Ta-Ha', if Allah, the Exalted, wills, from the text of Sibawayh in his 'Book' what supports what I have mentioned.

And in this verse and what preceded it from the verse ﴿And fear a Day when no soul will avail another﴾ [Al-Baqarah: 48] is a warning to the Arabs from their heedlessness in denying the resurrection and guidance to a question from those who deceive them from the people of the Book that they are more entitled to the truth than the Muslims regarding this story that occurred to their ancestors from their revival after their death. Likewise, what has come in their discussions from the story of the cow and the like, in which there is mention of revival in this abode or in the resurrection. Al-Harali said: And in this address is a sign of the Last Resurrection that has been promised to all of the offspring of Adam suddenly with a striking event and swift resurrection. For what has been confirmed for one of them and for a group among them can be generalized to all of them. Ended.
