Commentary
And when the parting of the sea was for the preservation of the body, and the sending down of the Book was for the preservation of the religion, He followed it with it. And the sound nature and the straight temperament necessitate the perfection of the deed at the time of the appointment and the entreaty of the appointed, and the gentleness towards him, and the flattery with what has been realized of hope in fulfilling his promise, especially after his great kindness in saving from the enemy and destroying him. He reproached them for their actions contrary to that by saying: "And when." And Al-Harali said: When He reminded them, the Exalted, of the matter of fulfilling the covenant, which is the conclusion of their affair, and of the detail that was the beginning of their affair, He organized that with the matter that is intermediate between the two extremes, the uppermost of which is the appointment of Musa (peace be upon him) with his Lord, whose favor upon him is a favor upon them. He said: "And when We appointed." From the promise, which is the expectation of good, and He promised us from the appointment, which is the advance in meeting and gathering and negotiation and similar things. "Musa" is a term derived from the Hebrew word, which is interpreted in what is said: water and tree. It was named so for what was placed in it from the chest thrown into the sea. "Forty nights" is the completion of the time of the night, and the night is the time of the obscuring of the apparent perceptions. It has ended.
And He specified the night with mention, indicating that the most delightful supplication is in it, and that there is no sleep during that period, but supplication is general for its night and day. And "forty" stands in the position of the second object of our promise, meaning the completion of forty, meaning the words or the sending down of the Torah at the end of the forty, which is Dhul-Qi'dah and ten from Dhul-Hijjah. It was said: Dhul-Hijjah and ten from Muharram. Al-Harali said: And in it is an indication that supplication is only prepared for the time of restraining the soul from that by which it is sustained, and the perfection of that number, which is a stage of transition from one state to another, is forty. And the mention of the time with the nights indicates that His supplication is a morning from the darkness of existence in the state of the particular creation, from the perspective that darkness is a sign of missing the light of truth, and the day is a sign of the appearance of the light of truth. And the first thing that began from the truth for creation is His words to a chosen one from His creation without an intermediary, and He is still in his world and in his land, which was a prison. So when the truth came to it for a servant of His, supplicating to Him as it will come to it on the Day of Judgment after resurrection, it became a place of mercy, guidance, and light, and this is the coming of Allah, glorified is He, from Sinai mentioned in the first Book. It has ended. And this is without the story of the Isra and Mi'raj that was for our Prophet (blessings and peace be upon him) in the breaking through of the highest heavens to the Lote Tree of the Ultimate Boundary to what only Allah, the Exalted, knows, and he heard the words without an intermediary and returned to his home on that night, having traversed distances that would take fifty thousand years, as I will clarify, if Allah, the Exalted, wills, in Surah As-Sajdah.
And when the noble souls and lofty aspirations necessitated aversion from the oppressor and disdain for everything attributed to him and reminded of him, and they had taken from the remnants of the household of Pharaoh from their adornments what they entered into his servitude and bondage, and their witnessing of what they saw from the signs necessitated the utmost distance from disbelief, he expressed their engagement with it by saying, 'Then.' And he said: ﴿Then you took﴾. Al-Harali said: This is from taking, which is an active form of what is meant by taking hold, as if it is the act of taking, and it is a transformation in meaning towards taking in the sense of perception, and it involves effort.
﴿The calf﴾ and he mentioned in this report the origin of the appointment and mentioned the time, and the address exceeded what came after that from the periods according to what the word 'Then' implies. Thus, the understanding of that necessitated what they gained of goodness, then they followed that by adhering to their custom in returning to what they were accustomed to from their deeds to the lowest act of one who has no intellect and no remaining insight in taking the body of a calf as a god after knowing the effects of divinity on the unseen. In it, there is astonishment that Moses, blessings and peace be upon him, was promised by Allah with conversation after the appointed time of forty days of fasting, worship, and devotion to his Lord, then they show them that they witnessed the god in a tangible form, while Moses, who spoke with his Lord, was prevented from seeing Him. So how about them? And that is their wrongdoing. They placed the deity in the position of something tangible, while He, glorified and exalted is He, is exalted above being seen by His chosen one who spoke with Him in this world. Rather, He spoke with him after his appointed time, and they were intent on deifying a visible entity without any appointment or specification! And in His saying, ﴿After him﴾, meaning after his coming to our appointment, there is an implication of mentioning Moses, blessings and peace be upon him, as a confirmation of what they should have been in anticipation of what Moses would bring them of the benefits of the conversation, just as one whose heart is attached to the one who is his role model; and the distance is a distance from a limit that is taken as a principle to be his predecessor before and his successor after.
And the affirmation of the neighbor is that their taking of that did not consume the time of distance ﴿And you are wrongdoers﴾, performing the action of one who is in the darkest of darkness after your salvation of Moses with the clear light.
