And when He reminded them of the apparent blessing, those who were guided took heed, and those who deserved punishment continued in their obstinacy. He reminded the people of entitlement of what they were punished with, which necessitates the meaning of salvation and what it was explained by, of what they were seized for due to sins that resemble what they are upon in their opposition to the Qur'an. So when the reminders of the covenant and the blessing did not benefit them, they were threatened by their persistence in the locations of what they were afflicted with from calamity by their enemy due to what they had committed of sins. 'And indeed, Joseph had come to you before with clear signs, but you remained in doubt about what he brought you until when he perished, you said, 'Allah will never send after him a messenger' [Ghafir: 34]. So in their denying the first message and their doubt, what befell them of punishment from the family of Pharaoh was until Allah saved them with Moses, blessings and peace be upon him. He said, 'And when'—that is, remember when—'We saved you' which is from salvation, and salvation means elevation above the lowliness, which is the elevated place from the earth that is freed from what can befall from the depths and the evil of the earth from destruction by a flood of water and similar. 'From the family of'—the family of a man is those whose conditions, actions, and deeds appear in him, so that they are as if he is in his absence from the meaning of the family, which is the mirage in which what is distant appears and what was not seen becomes visible by it.
'Pharaoh' is the name of the king of Egypt in the pre-Islamic era, a proper noun for the species of its kings, akin to the names of species in animals and others. Ended. [And what is meant by the family is Pharaoh and his followers, for the family is used for the person himself and for his family, followers, and allies - as stated in the dictionary, and it is said: it is not used except in what has a predominant honor.] Then he clarified what saved them from it by saying, 'They were causing you to suffer a severe punishment.' He named it thus because it is the most severe trial upon the soul due to what is in it of belittling it, from the herding, which is tormenting with disregard for the tortured, and herding is what the soul intensely despises and dislikes. Then he explained this by saying, 'They were slaughtering' from slaughtering, which is the repetition of slaughter, and slaughter is a deep cut in the neck, as stated by al-Harali.
And when each of the slaughtering of the son and the life of the woman without a man was more disgraceful, and when the girl remained, she became a woman, he expressed this with the words of sons and women. He said, "Your sons," meaning a drive for you like the drive of animals. "And they are ashamed," Al-Harali said: from the meaning of shyness, which is the preservation of life. "Your women," from the meaning of taking for the purpose of qualification, which is related to what has been derived from the terms of human and humanity and women, due to their sharing in one of the three letters: the hamzah, or the waw, or the ya, along with their gathering in the noon and the seen. This has ended. Then he alerted them to what is in it of greatness by saying, "And in that," indicating with the tool of distance coupled with the letter mim, "A trial," meaning a test, "from your Lord," meaning the Benefactor to you in times of hardship and ease. "Great," Al-Harali said: the trial, the test, is the revealing of the knowledge of a thing with severity and hardship, and it implies their deserving of that and their rectification with its severity rather than what is easier than it. He mentioned it with greatness due to its prevalence in bodies, souls, and spirits. He mentioned the meaning of salvation, then he detailed it in detail regarding how it is, after that, enumerating the blessing of salvation, which is the following of the mercy of bounty, which is the following of the elevation of advancement by the covenant; thus the address has ended in its meaning. This means that when He, the Exalted, confirmed them regarding what they had committed before Moses, blessings and peace be upon him, when they were afflicted by what befell them from the family of Pharaoh, He renewed for them a reminder of the blessing of salvation from the punishment of their previous deeds. This has ended.
