Commentary
They said, "Glorified are You," meaning we declare You free from any description that would imply a deficiency in knowledge or action. We disassociate ourselves from any claim of knowledge that is not attributed to You.
Al-Harali said: In this meaning, there is a manifestation of their virtue, their submission, and their acknowledgment, preparing for what is connected to the refusal of Iblis. It has ended. The result is that it is a declaration of the glorification of Allah, the Most High, from any deficiency, and an indication of their apology for what they have fallen into. Therefore, they said, "We have no knowledge except what You have taught us," which is evidence that there is no way to knowledge of anything except by the teaching of Allah. Al-Harali said: This is a response to the beginning of the matter for the one who has the beginning. Therefore, it was reported in a saying of knowledge: Whoever does not conclude his knowledge with ignorance has not truly known. That ignorance is the disassociation from knowledge except what Allah has taught. It has ended.
Then they specified Him with what they negated from themselves, saying, "Indeed, You alone are the All-Knowing," meaning the One who knows all information, "the All-Wise," meaning that no corruption can penetrate Your actions in any way, so there is no objection at all. Al-Harali said: This is an affirmation, a purification, and a sincerity of knowledge and wisdom for Allah alone. This is among the highest aspects of Islam, for it is the Islam of the hearts when the truth has adorned them with it! For knowledge and wisdom are the light of the hearts by which they live, just as water is the sustenance of bodies by which they live; and wisdom is the establishment of a cause between two matters that seem to have a demand from the preceding and a reliance from the subsequent. It has ended. Its origin in the language is the prevention of corruption, and that cannot occur except through complete knowledge.
