Commentary
And when it was known that no argument could repel Him, the command was: So obey what you have been commanded and avoid what you have been forbidden. Then He turned to it, warning of the Day of presentation before Him and the reckoning before Him. He said - and al-Harali said: When He concluded the address with a command regarding religion and the Hereafter in all its aspects and the manifestation of its wisdom connected to the affairs of this world, and clarified the matter of spending and usury, which is the ultimate matter of religion and the world in their righteousness, and concluded that with an admonition regarding the promise of His recompense in this world and the Hereafter, He summarized the admonition with the fear of the Day of return to the encompassing of His command, so that the conclusion of the speech would be with the most beautiful and comprehensive admonition, and that the end of the address would be with the intimidation of the souls, so that their resolves would gather on what is the key to their affairs, which is the acceptance of the righteousness of their religion, their world, and their Hereafter from the address of Allah, glorified and exalted is He. Thus, He concluded that with the perfection of its meaning with this verse, just as it is the verse with which the revelation was concluded, revealed to the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, while he was in complaint, and it is the last verse revealed to the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, in relation to ﴿Read in the name of your Lord﴾ [Al-Alaq: 1], which is the first revelation of prophethood, and ﴿O you who covers himself﴾ [Al-Muddathir: 1], which is the first revelation of the message. So the first of the matter was a warning, and its last was an admonition that incites the soul to fear and stirs the heart to longing from the meaning with which the address of Allah, glorified and exalted is He, concluded in the verse ﴿Master of the Day of Judgment﴾ [Al-Fatiha: 4]. It has ended. So He, exalted is He, said: ﴿And fear a Day﴾ meaning of the utmost greatness ﴿when you will be returned﴾ in a sensory manner with your very selves, just as you are in this world, and in meaning with all your affairs, a return that is apparent, nothing from the causes can conceal it, nor can any transient doubt obstruct it ﴿to Allah﴾ [Who] no description can encompass His greatness, nor can any limit encompass it. Thus, your condition after the transition from this world will be like your condition before emerging into it from the womb; you will have no authority whatsoever, nor will there be any one who has authority over you except Allah. And your condition on that Day will be one of helplessness, for no one can repay what belongs to Allah, glorified and exalted is He, of His blessings. So whoever is questioned about the reckoning will be punished; if you love to be overlooked there, then overlook your brothers today, and give charity as long as you are able to give charity, and fear the Fire on that Day, even if it is with half a date. And He, glorified and exalted is He, indicated the length of their standing in that position in a state of awe and the prolonging of their confinement in the scene of majesty and greatness by the tool of delay in His saying ﴿Then﴾. Al-Harali said, and it was said:
'O Messenger of Allah! Where will the people be on the Day when the earth is changed to another earth and the heavens?' [Ibrahim: 48] He said: 'In darkness beneath the bridge.' And he ﷺ said: 'They will remain in darkness for a thousand years.' It has been reported from Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, in detailing the positions of the Day of Judgment that the creation will be stopped at their graves for a thousand years, and they will be driven to the gathering place for a thousand years, and they will be stopped in darkness for a thousand years; then there will be the splitting of the seven heavens and the changing of the earth, and whatever Allah, glorified and exalted is He, wills of His command, awaiting His coming. So in the lesson of his words, and Allah, glorified and exalted is He, knows that this will be six thousand years, and just as it was built in six days, it will be destroyed in six days. 'As We began the first creation, We will return it.' [Al-Anbiya: 104] So that will be nine days; and His coming will be on the tenth day, which is the Day of Ashura, that day on which His command has repeatedly come in the Day of this world. Then he ﷺ described the positions until their end. It has ended.
And when the stopping of a person regarding all that he has done, both in secret and in public, is extremely disliked to him, let alone his recompense for everything [from it], not in relation to a specific position built for the action, His saying: 'It will be given in full' means it will be given as a form of fulfillment. 'Every soul will be given what it has earned' of good and evil. Al-Harali said: It has come in the form of 'fa'ala' indicating the flow of action without effort and burden. So in its indication, it will be given what it has earned of good and what it has formed for itself of evil, and that what it has taken on of evil, and in its entrance there is dislike, perhaps it will be forgiven for it, since it was not given what it has earned and what it has acquired, as He said in the following verse: 'For it is what it has earned, and against it is what it has acquired.' [Al-Baqarah: 286] So what it has acquired is against it, and perhaps it will be forgiven for it, for indeed it has been given what it has earned of evil, and it encompasses its apparent and hidden until it is facilitated for it. It has ended.
And when it is the habit of people that if something small remains, it falls into the realm of leniency, and the small differs by the difference of the origin, for example, a thousand is tolerated for a hundred, it has been clarified that the matter with him is not like that. So He said: 'And they will not be wronged in anything, even if it is little,' and this indicates justice among His servants. Al-Harali said: And this verse is a seal for the revelation and a seal for the completion of the meaning in this surah, which is the peak of the Qur'an and its tent, and a seal for every admonition and every conclusion. So it is from the special characteristics of the Muhammadan that is comprehensive and detailed from the Surah of Al-Hamd, indicating the details of the great matter of Allah concerning Him, His creation, and what is between Him and His creation. It has ended.
