Commentary
And when the context was preceding and following the spending, it was known that the estimation is: Whatever you have gathered of anything, then Allah will demand of you regarding its placement and gathering with the face of wisdom, and He will hold you accountable for that. So He urged towards secrecy in spending for good and fulfilling vows, and warned against spending in disobedience, even if it is in the slightest of ways, by stating that He knows all of that and will reward for it, His saying: ﴿And whatever you spend of expenditure﴾ means in any way of the ways. Thus, all legitimate expansions are included in it, such as during marriage, circumcision, childbirth, and establishing a residence, and in invitations for brothers and others besides that.
And when a person often fears missing out on something, he vows if it occurs with expenditure in a way of good and similar to that. However, perhaps he thinks that the encouragement to spend is specific to what Allah has initially urged, not to what a person has obligated upon himself. (p-98) [He said] ﴿Or you have vowed from a vow﴾ and the inclusion of 'min' is for the confirmation of comprehensiveness. Al-Harali said: And the vow is the binding of a promise with good that is expected to be acted upon or awaited for what he commits to, and it is the least of spending, especially if it is in the manner of stipulation. The Prophet ﷺ said: 'It is only extracted from the miser.' Ended.
﴿So indeed, Allah﴾ magnified the matter with this greatest name ﴿knows it﴾. He mentioned the pronoun because its clear return to the preceding is a greater magnification of the vow for what may be imagined in it of deficiency from the recommended in the Shari'ah. So be careful in the goodness of that and fulfilling it, and all that enters into it from commands and prohibitions, being cautious like one who seeks to please a great king with what he presents to him and offers to him. So whatever you have acted upon with wisdom in spending or otherwise, Allah, glorified and exalted is He, will reward you for it according to what He has mentioned to you of multiplication. And whoever among you does something [of it] in a manner not of wisdom, then he is a wrongdoer, placing the thing in a place other than its place, so it will be rejected from him and he will be punished for it, and he will have no supporter. Thus was the original, but He, glorified and exalted is He, has elevated and suspended the ruling with the description, so He said: ﴿And for the wrongdoers﴾ meaning those placing the thing in (p-99) a place other than its place ﴿there are no supporters﴾. Al-Harali said: In understanding this, that Allah takes the hand of the generous and the noble whenever he stumbles, and he finds for him a supporter, while the wrongdoer by placing oppression finds no supporter in the place of righteousness. And in it is a comprehensive negation expressed by the word 'min'. Ended.
