And when He, glorified and exalted is He, encouraged spending and concluded His verses with what necessitates the promise from the most truthful of speakers regarding wealth and reward in both abodes, He followed that with what the lying enemy has of the opposite of that. He said, warning against miserliness - in response to one who seemed to say: This is undoubtedly true, so why do souls rarely exist except as stingy in spending? -: "The devil" meaning the one whose name is the worst of names, for it necessitates destruction and distance. One of the two descriptions is sufficient to avoid him, so how if they both come together! "He promises you poverty" which prevents spending. Al-Harali said: The one whose fear causes the people of this world to cut off from each other, turn away, and hoard. And all of that does not remove poverty; every miser is poor even if he possesses the world, and every content person is rich. It is the right of one who is a servant to a rich one to realize that he is rich who enriches his master. Thus, in the fear of poverty is the fleeing of the servant from his Lord; and poverty is the lack of what one needs at a time from the standing of a person in his outward and inward. It has ended.
"And He commands you to commit immoral acts" which invalidate it from the blessings and harm and other pleasures of the souls, and perhaps it involves the destruction of wealth and the loss of lives. Al-Harali said: And everything that the repulsions of reason, law, and nature have gathered upon is immoral, and the greatest intended meaning here is miserliness, which is the most grievous disease, due to the relevance of mentioning poverty. Upon it is built the evil of this world and the Hereafter, and it is accompanied by greed, followed by envy, and all evil follows it. [It has ended] and in it is a disposition.
And when He mentioned what the enemy has of evil, He followed that, glorified and exalted is He, with what He has of good, saying, clarifying what was previously hinted at: "And Allah" meaning the One who has the most beautiful names and the highest attributes, the Most Merciful, the Most Loving, "promises you forgiveness from Him" for what has occurred from you of shortcomings. And in it is an indication that no one can truly estimate Allah as He deserves due to His encompassing attributes of perfection and due to what man is created with of deficiency. "And bounty" with an increase in both abodes, and every blessing from Him is bounty. Then He confirmed that with His saying: "And Allah" meaning the One who encompasses all perfection, "is All-Encompassing" for containing the meaning of [Halim] and is Rich. And He followed that with His saying: "All-Knowing" indicating that He does not lose anything, even if it is small. Al-Harali said: And in His indication is a weakening of the devil's plot and a noble promise for the one who is tempted by the fear of poverty and the commission of immoral acts due to what he knows of the weakness of souls and their quick acceptance of whispers. It has ended. Thus, He concluded the last of the verses of examples with what He concluded the first with, encouraging and warning.
