Commentary

And when this was understood, which does not accompany the condition of spending, the soul yearned to stand upon the truth of his matter. He made it clear in his saying: ﴿A good word﴾. Al-Harali said: It is what does not hurt the heart of the one being addressed, according to the state of him and the state of the speaker. And when the questioner may insist and become angry at the response, even if it is with a good word, which may anger the respondent, he said: ﴿And forgiveness﴾ for the questioner if he angers the one who responded to him. ﴿Is better than charity﴾, and it is the action by which the truth of faith in the unseen appears, since provision is unseen. The one who is confident spends, affirming the promise [informed of the greatness of its virtue]. ﴿Followed by harm﴾, whether by favor or otherwise, because at that time he would be combining benefit and harm, and perhaps the reward of the benefit does not suffice for the punishment of the harm. ﴿And Allah﴾, meaning, while the state is that the King, of whom there is none greater, ﴿is Self-Sufficient﴾, so He does not accept what He has not permitted. And when He frightened the one who gives charity with the attribute of the Self-Sufficient, desiring forbearance from the one who angered him by denying the favor or by speaking ill when responding with kindness, He said: ﴿Forbearing﴾, meaning He does not hasten against the one who disobeys Him, rather He provides for him and supports him while he disobeys Him and denies Him.
