Commentary

And when these verses surpassed the utmost that the eloquent seers know of the ends, and transcended to a limit that minds are incapable of reaching, and the windows of understanding diminished in bringing forth anything like it, He, glorified and exalted is He, alerted to that by His saying: ﴿Those﴾ meaning the miraculous verses for those whose noses are raised high, and whose ambitions and souls have elevated in ranks of pride; and the reference is to what has been mentioned in this surah, especially this story of the news of the Children of Israel, and the expression of that in these marvelous styles and miraculous eloquence ﴿The verses of Allah﴾ meaning the One whose greatness has risen and whose power and strength have been perfected. And since majesty is a name for pleasures that encompass the attributes of perfection and beauty and the descriptions of grandeur, the saying turned to the manifestation of greatness as a reference to their being unable to match this composition with attributes of pride and superiority. So He said: ﴿We recite it﴾ meaning we reveal it piece by piece with what we have of greatness ﴿to you﴾ as a confirmation of the foundations of the Book which is guidance, and as a strengthening of its principles ﴿with the truth﴾. Imam Sa'd al-Din al-Taftazani said in his explanation of the beliefs: The truth is the judgment that corresponds to reality, and it is applied to sayings, beliefs, religions, and schools of thought considering their inclusion of that, and it is opposed by falsehood. As for truthfulness, it has become common in sayings specifically and is opposed by falsehood. And it can be differentiated between them by the fact that correspondence is considered in truth from the aspect of reality, while in truthfulness it is from the aspect of judgment; thus the meaning of the truthfulness of judgment is its correspondence to reality. And the meaning of its truthfulness is its correspondence to reality - this is the end.

So the meaning of the verse is as follows: We are knowledgeable about the reality of these verses. Therefore, we have brought forth a statement that corresponds to that reality, neither exceeding it nor falling short of it. That statement is established as firmly as the reality itself. No fair-minded knowledgeable person can deny it or deny anything from it, just as no one can deny the occurrence of the known reality. The report about it is true because it corresponds to that reality without any increase or decrease. The essence is that the truth is considered from the side of the informer, for he brings a statement that equals the reality, thus it is true. And truth is considered from the side of the listener, for he looks at the report. If he finds it corresponding to the reality, he says: This is true. It is not far-fetched that this verse and His saying, glorified and exalted is He, "And he who brought the truth and believed in it" [Az-Zumar: 33], and His saying, "He said, 'The truth is, and I say the truth'" [Sad: 84], and "Indeed, he brought the truth and confirmed the messengers" [As-Saffat: 37], and "He is the truth confirming what is before it" [Fatir: 31], and likewise "And We did not create the heavens and the earth and what is between them except in truth" [Al-Hijr: 85], meaning that this action, which is our creation of it, is not something we have exceeded in. This reality corresponds to its creation; it does not exceed it, meaning that it was necessary for us to add something to it, nor can we limit ourselves to what we found, nor can we decrease from it, meaning that it was necessary for us to make it deficient from what it is, and we were not able to complete it like this; or by the truth which is our ability and choice, not as the philosophers claim about action by essence without choice; or because of the truth, meaning its establishment, affirmation, and the nullification of falsehood and its denial.

﴿And We have certainly brought you the truth, and indeed we are truthful﴾ [Al-Hijr: 64]. This means We have brought you the news of their punishment, which is established. The content of it, when it occurs, is known to correspond to the news. Its correspondence to the reality is that our informing about it is as it is, so we are truthful in it. Our attribution of the occurrence of the punishment to them is an attribution of correspondence to the reality. When it occurs, it looks at our informing and sees it corresponding to it, thus knowing our truthfulness in it. And what leaves no ambiguity in this is His saying, glorified and exalted is He, recounting from Yusuf, blessings and peace be upon him, ﴿My Lord has made it true﴾ [Yusuf: 100]. He brought about the correspondence of the reality to its interpretation. As for his truthfulness, blessings and peace be upon him, it is in relation to the news concerning the reality, which is that he saw what he informed about, and that was present at the time of his informing, for his news was, at the time of his informing about it, corresponding to the reality. As for the truthfulness of the vision, it is in consideration that it had a reality that corresponded to its interpretation. If it is said: The basis of mutual action is that it occurs between two, and one of them does to the other what the other does to him. Suppose we consider the correspondence from one side; that does not negate considering it from the other side. So what benefit is there in what you claimed? It is said that although it must consider both sides, it implies that the one who attributed the action to him is the requester, unlike the mutual action, for there is no indication of his action in that. The summary of the matter is that the reality is more deserving of the name of truth, for it is established, and the news is more deserving of the name of truthfulness. The reality is a requester for news that corresponds to it to be known as it is, and the news is a requester for correspondence to the reality to gain honor by being called truthful. The first established in the essence of the matter is the reality, for it is before the news about it that it has occurred. If the beginning of the request is from the reality, the news is named by its name. If the beginning of the request is from the news, it is named by its true name. Perhaps if you consider the verses of the Book that speak the truth, you will find them all upon this method - and Allah, glorified and exalted is He, is the One who grants success. And when it is established that the recitation upon him, blessings and peace be upon him, is true, He, the Exalted, said: ﴿And indeed, you﴾, meaning while you are ﴿among the messengers﴾, by what these verses indicate about your knowledge of them without a teacher from among humans, then by their miraculous nature that remains throughout time.
