Then he clarified that they spoke the truth in their words before engaging in action. He said, adding to what he means by saying: So when they said that to them, Allah gathered their words, and they relied on Him and came forth to fight before Him: "And when they came forth" while they were in their state of weakness and fewness. Coming forth is to emerge from everything that is concealed in a protrusion from the ground, which is that in which there is nothing to conceal from the eyes of the observer. "To Goliath" is the name of a king from the kings of the Canaanites who was in the Levant during the time of the Children of Israel. "And his soldiers" were in their state of strength, multitude, and boldness due to their accustomed victory. "They said, Our Lord, pour upon us" from pouring, which is the pouring that is abundant upon the entirety of what is poured upon. "Patience upon us" until we reach from the striking what we love in such a situation. "And make firm" from firmness, is a form of strengthening from steadfastness, which is the ability in the position that is meant to be unyielding. "Our feet" is the plural of foot, which is what a thing stands upon and relies on. That is, by strengthening our hearts so that we do not flee, and our strikes may be directed and painful. They indicated by their saying, "And grant us victory over the disbelieving people," the place of their saying: upon them, that they are only fighting them for the sake of preserving His right, glorified and exalted is He, not for any selfish gain as was the case with most of them when they first asked. And that they are strong, so they must have His assistance against them, glorified and exalted is He.
