And when He, glorified and exalted is He, made clear that death cannot be escaped from by fleeing from the command of jihad, which is the greatest objective of these contexts, He directed the saying to those who need to be commanded with it. He prefaced it with 'and' so that the conjunction is understood as not being connected to anything previously mentioned. The intended meaning is: So do not flee from the causes of death, but remain steadfast in the places of hardship. And fight. He expressed this in the locative form to indicate the necessity of their being in the fight, even if the conditions become severe, remaining steadfast for the religion, being mindful of it, and not deviating from it in any way. They should be sincere in their advance against those who persist in disbelief and hasten to refrain from those who show submission, and similar considerations of the laws of faith. He expressed 'the path' to indicate the ease and clarity of the religion, so there is no excuse for deviating from anything of it in any situation. He said: 'in the cause of Allah,' meaning that which has no equal, as He has prescribed for you, even if you dislike fighting.
And when He commanded them after warning them, He encouraged and frightened them with His saying: 'And know,' alerting them to listen and to prepare their understanding for what is being conveyed to them. 'That Allah,' meaning the One who has complete power and encompassing knowledge, 'is Hearing' of what you say when you are commanded with what you dislike of fighting, 'and Knowing' of what you conceal of turning away from it and inclining towards it. So He will reward you for good in word, deed, and intention. A good deed is rewarded tenfold to seventy times to seven hundred times and to many multiples. And for a bad deed, it is rewarded with its like if He wills. 'And your Lord does not do injustice to anyone.'
