Commentary

And when He, glorified and exalted is He, clarified the matter in the previous verse, He indicated a type of explanation, pointing to the fruit of marriage, which is a prohibition for everyone with understanding against fornication. He said: ﴿Your women﴾ meaning those who are lawful for you by contract or by right hand possession. And when the placing of the sperm, from which offspring will come, is like the placing of the seed, from which the crop will grow, He likened them to the fields, indicating that the original purpose is the desire for offspring. He said, naming the place of cultivation by its name, applying the name of the part to the whole, unified because it is a type: ﴿A field for you﴾, thus clarifying that.

Al-Harali said: Let the address be by indication, that is in the first verse for those of understanding, and by explicit mention, that is in this verse for those of knowledge. For cultivation, as some scholars have said, only occurs in the place of planting.

And in specifying the cultivation by mention and generalizing all the means leading to it by His saying: ﴿So go to your fields﴾ meaning the suitable place for cultivation, ﴿whenever you wish﴾ meaning from wherever and however, indicating the prohibition of anything else due to the futility in it from lack of benefit. Al-Thaalabi said: The backsides are the place of excrement, not the place of cultivation.

And when these matters are hidden and cannot be assumed to be good and are restricted from being corrupt except by pure piety, He said: ﴿And advance﴾ meaning perform the act of advancing. And since the context is for the collective, and it is from the desires of the soul, He indicated the prohibition against following all that it desires: ﴿For yourselves﴾ meaning from this act and others of all that relates to desires, that if it is presented to those whom you fear and believe to be good, you boast about it before them. This is by diverting, for example, this act from mere desire to the intention of chastity and seeking offspring that will endure with good deeds, so that the reward will be connected. And from the advancement is the naming at the time of intimacy, as has been reported by the Sunnah, and this was explicitly stated by the scholar Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them, regarding what has been transmitted from him.

And when the actions of humans in desires bring them closer to the actions of one in doubt, there is a need for more admonition. So He said: ﴿And fear Allah﴾ meaning place between yourselves and what the Greatest King dislikes from that and other things, a protection from the lawful or the ambiguous.

And He, glorified and exalted is He, increased in admonition and warning by emphasizing the pursuit of knowledge and the depiction of the presentation. He said: ﴿And know that you will meet Him﴾ and He will question you about all that you have done, whether minor or major, good or otherwise. So do not fall into what you are shy of before Him when He asks you, for He is greater than all that is great.

Al-Harali said: And in it is an indication of what occurs during that time of the rulings that the rulings of the judges of this world do not reach, which cannot be resolved except in the Hereafter. This is because the matter between the spouses is a secret that is not disclosed. He, blessings and peace be upon him, said: "A man is not to be asked about why he struck his wife." And he said: "I do not like for a woman to complain about her husband." So Allah, the Exalted, informed that the ruling of the matter between the spouses is deferred until the meeting with Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, who is a guardian over what is between the spouses, so that it remains a secret that only Allah, the Exalted, reveals. In His indication, there is a preservation of dignity in that the spouses do not resort to a judge in this world, and that each one of them returns to the piety of Allah and His knowledge of the meeting with Allah - this is the end.

And since this cannot be comprehended in its true understanding by everyone, He pointed to that by referring to the most complete of creation. He said, adding to what you estimate: So warn the disbelievers, whether by action or by words, His saying, the Exalted: "And give good tidings to the believers," meaning those who have made faith a firmly established attribute, preparing themselves for vigilance. This is an indication that such matters are of the trusts that are only hindered by sincerity in faith and being firmly established in it.
