Commentary
And when he concluded these two sections with the seeker in the pleasure of Allah, may Allah be pleased with him, as a similarity to the first ones, it was very good to follow it with his saying: "O you who have believed". This call is to be an initial occurrence in the ear of this aware one, just as the hypocrite was struck by what preceded it from piety and gathering, while it being a proof of the attribute of compassion. The repetition of the command to believe among the categories of deeds is one of the greatest proofs of the wisdom of the one commanding it. For it, while being more emphatic for his command and more possible for his glory and pride, is understood to be the foundation in the guidance that necessitates happiness on the Day of Calling. So he said: "Enter into peace"; that is, the faith which obligates ease of submission to all good. It is originally with the opening and breaking, the apparent reconciliation in saying and action; that is, O you who have believed with your tongue, like this stubborn one, let the faith or submission be entirely from the inner and outer, encompassing you from all sides. It should encompass the heart and the form just as it encompassed the tongue, and there should be no way for the attachment of ignorance and the roughness of disbelief to you. "Completely"; that is, let all of you be in that one law, like the one who sells himself. And do not divide, so that some of you are like this and some of you like that stubborn one, for that is a proof of falsehood in the claim of faith.
And when the refusal and obstinacy that is carried by arrogance and pride is the action of the devil and the fruit of his being from fire, he said: "And do not follow"; that is, do not burden yourselves with the matter of misguidance against what Allah, glorified and exalted is He, has created you upon and made easy for you from guidance. "The steps of the devil"; that is, the paths of the distant one, who is burned in pride away from the truth.
Al-Harali said: In understanding this, the empowerment today is for him, and in it is a sign and warning of what has occurred in this nation, which is occurring and will occur from their exiting from peace to conflict due to the occurrence of fitna in tongues and weapons regarding worldly matters and their return to their matters of ignorance. For the world is the domains of the devil, just as the Hereafter is the salvation of the Most Merciful. Thus, the beginning of the fitna was since the breaking of the closed door to peace, which is Umar ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him. The chaos has not ceased and will not cease until war lays down its burdens.
Then He, glorified and exalted is He, justified that by saying: "Indeed, he is to you a clear enemy"; that is, by what We have informed you regarding your father Adam, may blessings and peace be upon him, and other matters whose evidences are apparent. How excellent is this conclusion that opposes the conclusion of that which preceded it! For the remembrance of compassion from Him, glorified is He, regarding His greatness and our servitude, which is the meaning of the guardianship, the spirit of which is submission to all that the guardian loves, and the remembrance of the enmity of the misleader is the greatest deterrent from Him and a call to Allah, glorified and exalted is He.
