Commentary
And when He, glorified and exalted is He, informed of the benefit of pardon, He informed of the benefit of its opposite, completing the reprimand of the People of the Book for their deviation from the text and their blindness to wisdom. He said: ﴿And for you﴾ meaning, O you who have believed, ﴿is legal retribution﴾ meaning, this type, which is the killing of the killer by the killed soul without transgression or aggression. ﴿There is life﴾ meaning, a great and wondrous life because whoever knows that he will be killed will not kill.
And Al-Harali said: So, life is for those other than the wrongdoer from his tribe, from those who were wronged by the wrongdoing of others in this world. And life is for the wrongdoer by what is exacted from him in the Hereafter, because whoever has his sin expiated is alive in the Hereafter. And whoever remains with a wrongdoing and is taken for it is in that state among those who do not die in it nor live, because the punished in his punishment does not find the taste of life due to the overwhelming pain, nor is he in death due to his awareness of his punishment - this has ended.
As for absolute killing, as the people of ignorance used to say: killing negates killing, this is not the case. Because those who knew that if they killed two, only one would be killed for them, perhaps that would lead them to killing, and killing enters into it from the beginning, which is more conducive to killing, not negating it. And they were unanimous on the cleverness of their word and the eloquence of its expression. And it is known to everyone with understanding that between it and what is in the Qur'an is like the difference between Allah and His creation, for it is an addition to the wording of the Qur'an in letters and deficient in meaning. So, if it is intended to correct it before the killing as legal retribution negates killing unjustly, the increase became many and did not reach the eloquence and sweetness of what is in the Qur'an - and Allah, glorified and exalted is He, is the one who grants success.
And when this expression is, as you see, miraculous in the correctness of its meaning, precision of its indication, and abundance of its concepts, He, glorified and exalted is He, said, encouraging high aspirations: ﴿O people of understanding﴾ meaning, the minds that benefit their possessors by freeing them from what is like the shell, for it is the gathering of the core.
Al-Harali said: It is the inner aspect of the mind, which is meant to observe the command of Allah in the witnessed matters, just as the outer aspect of the mind is meant to observe the realities of the created beings. They are the ones who look to their Lord in His signs - this has ended.
Then He explained this by saying: ﴿That you may become righteous﴾ meaning, to Allah by complying with what He has legislated, so you may avoid killing.
Al-Harali said: And in the ambiguity of perhaps, which is from the character as previously mentioned, there is a hesitation in informing of their classification into two types: between those who bear that for him is righteousness and between those who carry it and increase it in transgression - this has ended.
