Commentary
And when he mentioned their recompense and explained their condition and the amazement at their matter, he mentioned the reason that necessitated this great distancing and significant threat. He said: ﴿That﴾ indicating by the tool of distance ﴿that Allah﴾. He also mentioned the Greatest Name, which means that He has all the attributes of perfection, in glorification of the station. ﴿He sent down the Book﴾, meaning: the one that encompasses all types of guidance, ﴿with the truth﴾, revealed gradually to facilitate understanding and to train both the specific and the general. It is suitable for the intention of the Qur'an and the Torah, meaning: the established, complete in its establishment. So whoever conceals it has attempted to deny what Allah, glorified and exalted is He, has affirmed. He has opposed Allah in His dominion, and whoever contradicts it, while it is that which has no doubt attached to it, has considered the clear to be confusing, thus he has distanced the target.
And when the estimation was: they differed, he followed it with his saying: ﴿And indeed, those who differed﴾ meaning: some of them opposed others ﴿in the Book﴾ itself, meaning: not in its understanding. This phrase indicates that the difference is the saying of some in the entire Book or in some of it is false, and the acknowledgment of some of its rulings and the denial of some of them, and the distortion of the words from their places, and so on. ﴿Indeed, they are in schism﴾ because each one of them is in a faction ﴿far﴾ indeed very far from the faction of the people of truth. For this reason, the companions, may Allah be pleased with them, feared the difference of the people of this religion in the Qur'an, just as the Jews and Christians differed, so they gathered them on one Mushaf. Thus, the difference is not in the aspects of the narrations and the ways of understanding from that; and it has occurred, as you see, a warning to the polytheists from the Arabs without what was included in the warning to the Children of Israel from the reprimand and reproach for the distinction between them. This is because the disbelief of the polytheists is out of ignorance, while the disbelief of those is out of obstinacy after repeatedly witnessing the signs. And whoever contemplates the Qur'an and reads the Torah knows the long duration of Musa, blessings and peace be upon him, among them reciting to them the Torah according to its revelation piece by piece, and that they, despite that, whenever they witnessed a sign, they would bring forth disbelief and remove gratitude and ask for something else out of obstinacy and cunning. ﴿And We made their hearts hard﴾ [Al-Ma'idah: 13] and much of that has passed from the beginning of the surah regarding the Torah, and its remainder will come, if Allah, the Exalted, wills, in the appropriate places from the verses of the Qur'an. And Imam Abu Ja'far ibn al-Zubair said: Whenever something is clarified in the Glorious Book regarding the conditions of the Christians, it is not as what has been mentioned regarding the Jews, for the reason mentioned, meaning: that their disbelief is obstinacy. And the address of the polytheists of the Arabs in what has been referred to is without the address of the two groups, as they have received what the Arabs have not received, and they were given glad tidings in their books, and the polytheists of the Arabs do not have anything like that. And the deviation from guidance encompasses all, and they are not in any of the straight path, even though the worst condition is that of one whom Allah has misled upon knowledge. And here ends the mention of what he warned against and prohibited for those who wish to follow the straight path and the clarification of the condition of whoever deviates from it and turns away from it, thinking that he is upon something, and he included the divergent types of the deviators into three categories: the Jews, the Christians, and the people of polytheism. And with them, all who deviate will be included, so the hypocrites of our nation who doubted after showing their faith and acted like them in cunning, deceit, and mockery will be included with the Jews, and those who are characterized by their conditions will be included with the Christians, and with the polytheists, whoever has made for Allah, glorified and exalted is He, a rival and believed in an action for others in a way that is not the way of earning. And the Magians are included with the people of polytheism. And polytheism is the most branching of these six paths. For this reason, he, blessings and peace be upon him, said: "Polytheism is more hidden than the crawling of an ant." And whoever does the actions of those mentioned and does not end up with it in departing from his religion and exiting in any of his beliefs, there is fear for him that this may be a means to catch up with those he resembles. And to this, he, blessings and peace be upon him, referred with his saying: "Four traits, whoever possesses them is a pure hypocrite: when he speaks, he lies; when he makes a promise, he betrays; when he makes a vow, he breaks it; and when he disputes, he behaves immorally." To similar such from the hadiths; it has ended.
