Commentary
And when it was in the clarification of these prohibited things, there was an indication of the blame of those among the Arabs who made them lawful and left what they were commanded of the good things out of ignorance and imitation. He followed it by reiterating the blame of those who conceal what they have of the truth from what was revealed in their Book regarding the description of the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, the matter of pilgrimage, the matter of the qibla, and other things that confirm this Book, in which there is no doubt, fearing the interruption of what was guided to them for their leadership from their religion in a way that is blameworthy for them for making lawful the consumption of unlawful things with clear knowledge that they have deserved blame from two aspects: one of them is the act of eating in this manner which leads to turning away from the good things and agreeing with the Arabs; the second is their concealment of what they know of the truth. So He said: "Indeed, those who conceal" (p-350) confirming their blame with various types of emphasis. And indeed, His bestowal of the attributes of forgiveness and mercy is remarkable, as He concluded the verse of concealment with the attributes of repentance and mercy. Thus, with what is in it of encouragement, it is of the kind of caution, meaning that it is assistance that is not forgiven for such as these unless they possess what the first verse indicated regarding repentance. His saying: "What Allah has revealed" attributes the revelation to His Greatest Name for the comprehensiveness of the Book with various rulings. "From the Book" means: from its limits and rulings and other than that from what the first verse indicated by the clear signs and guidance from the wisdoms and rulings.
And when it was from concealment that which is intended for good, how many a word of truth was intended by it falsehood! He restricted it by His saying: "And they exchange it for a small price." Al-Harali said: And the price is that which cannot be benefited from in its essence until it is transferred to something else of compensations. Thus, the warning is upon what entails the ignorance of the concealer and his eagerness for acquiring knowledge and his conducting (p-351) in other than what Allah, the Exalted, has conducted upon the tongues of His Prophets, "And I do not ask you for it any reward."
And when everything that has not been established from the good of this world in the Hereafter, even if it is great, he said: "Little." This is the intended meaning; do not restrict it to the little.
And when they had distanced themselves from the places of mercy due to their stinginess with what does not diminish by spending, He indicated to them with the tool of distance and said: ﴿Those﴾. And in addressing the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, there is an indication of this occurring from a group of his nation, being eager for this world. ﴿What they eat﴾ means: in this state, according to what is indicated by what. And when eating is applied merely to corruption, its meaning is confirmed by His saying: ﴿In their bellies﴾, the plural of belly, which is the space of the hollow of the hollow thing, being hidden from its exterior, which is the surface of that belly. ﴿Except the Fire﴾, as His knowledge, glorified and exalted is He, encompasses the unseen. Indeed, that is in reality, and His sight is for the eyes of the people of unveiling who see the consequences in the beginnings and the unseen in the witnessed. And in mentioning it in the form of restriction, there is a negation for the interpretation of the interpreter by it being a cause, and a diversion for it to the aspect of the reality that is attained by unveiling and is beyond the reach of the senses. So they were in that like the cautious one who puts his hand in hot water and does not feel it, thus feeling that the senses of these people have died concerning what they have taken.
And when He preceded the warning regarding the price for being the bearer of concealment, He followed it with the warning of the concealment itself, saying: ﴿And Allah will not speak to them﴾, meaning: the greatest King, who when He speaks to someone, everything turns to Him in a speech that indicates their blame for not speaking to the people about what was prescribed for them. And He said: ﴿On the Day of Resurrection﴾, emphasizing what was indicated by what preceded it, that the intended meaning of that is the state. ﴿And He will not purify them﴾, meaning: He will not cleanse them from the filth of sins, nor praise them, nor increase their deeds with what they will receive from the covenant on the Day of meeting, just as He purifies by that whom He wills from His servants. For they concealed from the servants what would purify them. And in this is a great sin for concealing knowledge. ﴿And for them﴾, along with this punishment, ﴿is a painful punishment﴾ for what they caused the people of hardship by concealing from them what would establish them on the clear path.
