Commentary
So when all of that was known, and the examples are more firmly established in the mind and clearer for the conditions, like their condition in the guidance which they sold for misguidance with tangible matters, because the representation by them has a great significance in conveying meanings even to the rigid minds and establishing them in it by His saying, ﴿Their example﴾ that is, in their condition which they sought to live by, ﴿is like the example of one who kindled a fire﴾ that is, he sought for it to be kindled for him, and it is his guidance to walk in its light. Its origin is from fire when it moves due to its agitation and disturbance, so it kindled and illuminated.
﴿So when it illuminated﴾ that is, the fire, and the singularity of the pronoun is based on the term 'the one who', and he said, ﴿what is around it﴾ and he intended to benefit from it in seeing what he wants, and it is a metaphor for what has happened to them of safety by what they said of the word of Islam without conviction. ﴿Allah took away﴾ He who has complete knowledge and power, and He gathered the pronoun considering the meaning so that it would not be assumed that some of them benefited without others after he singled out the reduction of light, even if it was strong at first for its extinction in the end. So he said, ﴿by their light﴾ that is, which arose from that fire by extinguishing it; and there is no light for them other than it. And he did not say, 'by their brightness', so that it would not be assumed that what is meant by it is merely the increase, because brightness is greater than absolute light. ﴿He it is who made the sun a light and the moon a light﴾ [Yunus: 5]. So their light went away and their fire remained, so that the heat of it would gather with the heat of the loss of what benefits them from the light. And he expressed by illumination first as a reference to the strength of their beginning and the extinction of their end, because the essence of their false condition, and falsehood has a dominance then it diminishes at the one who is established for it, so that the truthful can be distinguished from the liar. And he expressed by 'went away' without 'removing it' to indicate textually that He, glorified and exalted is He, is not with them, and He confirmed that by the expression of 'made them leave', so he said, ﴿and left them in darkness﴾ that is, in misguidance from their hearts and their sights and their night, that is, darkness in which no sight penetrates. Therefore, its result is ﴿they do not see﴾ that is, they have no sight at all by sight or insight.
