Commentary
And when he did not leave them a hold from the direction of Ibrahim, peace be upon him, he followed that indication regarding the validity of their claims that the religion is in accordance with his command in every time, not with what he has decreed for any of His creation. For there is no restriction upon Him nor objection. Rather, He can command today something and tomorrow, for example, something contrary to it, and He can do whatever He wills of abrogation and cancellation. So he said: ﴿That is a nation﴾, meaning: Ibrahim and his people ﴿has passed﴾, meaning: suppose they are upon what you claim, they have passed and their time has gone. Nothing will benefit you except what you find in your time now by the ruling of what has been revealed that is miraculous for all the people of the earth, their red and black. And it is permissible to say: When the content of what has preceded from the affirmation of the divinity of Allah and their concealing the testimony of what they have is the affirmation of what He, glorified and exalted is He, informed of through the tongue of this noble Prophet regarding the fact that His chosen ones are upon His religion of Islam, they are innocent of them. The meaning is: If you claim falsely that knowledge has come to you from Allah regarding what you have claimed, it is said: Indeed, the one you claim against from the prophets, his miracle has ended with his death, and your book is not safe from alteration and change due to it being non-miraculous. And this Prophet who has brought the Qur'an is standing among you, informing you about Allah of the falsehood of your claims, and he supports his words with the miracles, of which this Qur'an is one, that all the Arabs have failed to bring a chapter like it, and you too, despite your sharing with them in eloquence in prose and poetry and your specialty over them in knowledge, are obliged to accept it. For you do not rely in promoting your lies after effort except upon the one whose truth has been established by the establishment of his message, and his message has been established by the appearance of his miracle. Thus, it is obligatory upon you to accept his command, and this necessarily leads to the conclusion that it is obligatory upon you to accept this caller with this Qur'an for the same reason. Otherwise, accepting some of those who have been established with this description without others would be arbitrary and following the blameworthy desire in every legislation that is prohibited for you by His saying, the Most High: ﴿Is it that whenever a messenger comes to you with what your souls do not desire﴾ [Al-Baqarah: 87]. This is while the refutation of your words regarding them is more evident, as it is not reasonable that the predecessor in relation to the successor has occurred except after it with long periods. And the explicit text will come to invalidate that in Al-Imran, if Allah, the Most High, wills, and the indication of his opposition to reason is in His saying: ﴿Do you not understand﴾ [Al-Imran: 65] so that the truth of transmission and the ruling of reason coincide in its invalidation. And to all of this is the indication in His saying: ﴿That is a nation that has passed﴾, meaning: before you for ages, and the news about them cannot be accepted after it except with certainty, and there is no way for you to it. And the certainty has arisen against your opposition to them with this Qur'an, which is established in its truth by its miraculous nature, as has preceded and as indicated by His saying, the Most High: ﴿For it is for what it has earned﴾, meaning: of its deeds ﴿and for you is what you have earned﴾, meaning: of your deeds, so they will not be asked about your deeds ﴿nor will you be asked﴾, meaning: you ﴿about what they used to do﴾.
