Commentary

And when there was in that the greatest recording against them, that they had rejected the will of the chosen ones from their ancestors and had deviated from their religion and worshipped contrary to it, it was certainly known that the answer is that they did not witness that nor are they Muslims. He expressed this by saying: ﴾That is a community that has passed away﴿ meaning: before you, by ages that you did not witness. And he pointed out that they acted contrary to their deeds by saying: ﴾For it is theirs﴿ meaning: the community ﴾what it earned﴿ meaning: from the religion of Islam, specific to it, there is no partnership for you in it ﴾And for you is what you have earned﴿ meaning: of what you are upon of desires, specific to you, they will not be questioned about your deeds ﴾nor will you be questioned﴿ meaning: you ﴾about what they used to do﴿.
