Commentary

And when their condition was based on deception by showing good and concealing evil, and they saw their corruption as a form of reform due to their reversed perception, they would argue about it with various doubts. Their words sometimes deceived those who heard them from the believers, because the believer is naive and noble, while the disbeliever is cunning and vile. So Allah, the Most High, warned against their condition, affirming for them what they denied about themselves of corruption, and limiting it to them, saying: "Indeed, they are" meaning specifically "the corrupters"; that is, those who are complete in corruption, reaching a level of it that makes the corruption of others in comparison to their corruption non-existent, due to the destruction it causes to the bonds of kinship and the harm it brings to the believer from safety. Al-Harali said: And when the state of tranquility with faith is reform, it must be that their disturbance in it is corruption, especially with their assumption that being with these at one time and with those at another is from wisdom and reform, which is in fact the essence of corruption. For it truly contradicts these and those, as they have corrupted both sides of faith and disbelief. Therefore, it was said: What can the hypocrite reform? Because he has no sincere friend nor a clear enemy, so nothing can be relied upon from him. This has ended.

And when this description necessitated great fear, He followed it with what alleviates it by saying: "But they do not perceive"; that is, they are in the utmost coarseness, to the extent that they have no awareness to act well in what they attempt of corruption now, as indicated by what was mentioned in the previous verse, which indicates that they are not in line with the state, nor in what is to come in time. For "no" does not accompany it except in the meaning of the future. Therefore, their corruption only affects the harm of their own selves, so do not fear them, for I am sufficient for you against them.
