Commentary
And when all of these factions participated in injustice, and the ignorant increased, they prevented the party of Allah from the construction of the Sacred Mosque by what pleases Him from words and actions. Thus, they increased in that another form of injustice. And whoever prevents one mosque because it is a mosque, prevents all mosques. He said: ﴿And who is more unjust﴾ meaning: than them. And He replaced the pronoun by saying: ﴿From those who prevented the mosques of Allah﴾ meaning: the gathering of the attributes of perfection, which are the gardens of this world, as they are the causes of Paradise that they confined to themselves. Then He replaced that with a magnification for it, mentioning it repeatedly, saying: ﴿That His name be mentioned in it﴾. And He added by saying: ﴿And strives for its destruction﴾ meaning: by preventing it from the remembrance of Allah due to the various aspects of their injustice, increasing their reprimand. And prevention is to refrain from what is directed towards it. And the mosque is a place of prostration, and it is the lowest place of the standing one. And striving is the hastening in a matter, whether physically or meaningfully. And destruction is the absence of construction, and construction is reviving a place and occupying it with what it was designated for, as said by al-Harali.
Then He mentioned, glorified is He, what He arranged for their actions from fear in the mosque in which they terrified His allies, and in all of its kind, and disgrace in this world and the Hereafter, against what He arranged for those who do good. He said: ﴿Those﴾ meaning: the distant, the hated.
﴿It was not for them﴾ meaning: what is valid and what is appropriate,
﴿to enter it﴾ meaning: the mosques described,
﴿except in fear﴾. And their security in it was only due to the abundance of helpers regarding what they committed of injustice and collusion for falsehood, and we will reveal that. Then He generalized the ruling regarding what this fear includes, saying: ﴿For them in this world is disgrace﴾ meaning: great disgrace because of that and other than it. Then He increased it by adding His saying: ﴿And for them in the Hereafter﴾ which they deny by belief or actions,
﴿is a great punishment﴾. So He indicated by the description of the punishment to the description of the disgrace which He referred to with the tanween.
Al-Harali said: And in it is news of the nullification of what diverts from them a face of the punishment, so they received from the great punishment what the disbelievers received, until what they had of a religion and a scripture was not, and that is the worst of loss. He said: And among the signs of the Day of Resurrection is the neglect of the mosques. Therefore, every nation, every group, and every specific person who committed a crime in a mosque, his action becomes a cause for its destruction. For indeed, Allah, the Exalted and Majestic, punishes him with terror and fear that befalls him in this world, until those who destroyed a city from the cities of Islam are included, or whose actions were a cause for its destruction. And among that is what occurred from the actions of those who were empowered over the Sacred House due to what the actions of the Jews led to in it. He said: Thus, Allah has established His Sunnah that whoever does not uphold the sanctity of His mosques, He expels him from them and makes him in need of entering them under the authority and protection of His enemies, as the insights of the people of insight have witnessed, especially in the sacred land where the dominions of dominance alternate between this nation and the people of the Book.
﴿Alif Lam Meem﴾ [Ar-Rum: 1] ﴿The Romans have been defeated﴾ [Ar-Rum: 2] ﴿In the nearest land. And they, after their defeat, will be victorious﴾ [Ar-Rum: 3] ﴿In a few years﴾ [Ar-Rum: 4]. So every group, in its few years, when its deeds become bad in its mosque, is expelled from it and enters into the few of the others, fearful. Thus, until the end is for the righteous when the believers rejoice in the victory of Allah. He said: And in his indication is a warning against the closing of mosques and their being locked and restricted for those who intend to worship in them and to be alone with the remembrance of Allah. And the raising of mosques is not to prevent them, but their raising is that nothing other than the name of Allah is mentioned in them. He, glorified and exalted is He, said: ﴿In houses which Allah has permitted to be raised﴾ [An-Nur: 36]. Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, said when he built the courtyard: Whoever wants to speak nonsense or talk or recite poetry, let him go out to this courtyard. And the Prophet ﷺ said: "Keep your children and madmen away from your mosques, and your swords and your buying and selling, and build on their doors the purifying places." So in the permissibility of that is an indication that whoever acts in the mosques of Allah in a manner other than what they were established for, which is the remembrance of Allah, is striving for their destruction and will experience fear in the place of safety. The end.
