Commentary
And when what He, glorified and exalted is He, mentioned of the completeness of His power and the greatness of His kingdom became firmly established, and what He manifested of His sacred essence of greatness by repeating His proper name and affirming that anything besides Him is nonexistence, the hearts became prepared for admonition. He struck them with the discipline of severe denial and said: "Or do you want to reject the command of your Creator in abrogation, or do you want to take besides Him a god who cannot do anything, by asking your Messenger to make for you another god as Musa was asked that?" And when their question was in a short time, He affirmed the connection and said: "Before this time;" meaning: before this time, when his people said after they saw the signs and they passed by a people who were devoted to their idols: "Make for us a god as they have gods" [Al-A'raf: 138]. And they said: "Show us Allah openly" [An-Nisa: 153]. And they said: "We will not be patient with one food" [Al-Baqarah: 61]. And they were being obstinate with him in the rulings of Allah with various forms of obstinacy, as previously mentioned. And "the will" in creation is the inclination of the soul towards a beginning that it faces, as stated by Al-Harali. The most conclusive evidence for what I have estimated is His saying, in connection to what you estimate: "So they disbelieve, for whoever asks for that has exchanged disbelief for faith."
"And whoever exchanges disbelief for faith" means: he takes disbelief in exchange for faith by turning away from the signs and asking for others or clinging to what has been abrogated from it. And He expressed it in the present tense to draw in anyone who has stumbled by asking for something of that to return with repentance so that the continuity of misguidance may be removed from him.
"For he has certainly gone astray from the straight path" means: he has deviated from it and its middle, and he has not been guided to it even if he is in clear signs from it. For indeed, whoever deviates from the straight path is close to being distanced to a distance where there is no safety with it.
And that this is My straight path, so follow it, and do not follow the other paths, for they will separate you from His path. [Qur'an 6:153] And often, groups of people would waver when the verses changed and the rulings were forgotten, according to what occurs in the soul of reluctance towards it or a burden to accept it. This leads to misguidance away from the straightness of this path. And therein is an indication that the address is to those who have believed; for the believers, defined by the description, do not change from faith to disbelief. No one reverts from his religion after faith has mixed with the sweetness of his heart. "So whoever disbelieves in Taghut and believes in Allah has certainly grasped the firmest handhold, which will never break." [Qur'an 2:256] "And whoever submits his face to Allah while he is a doer of good has certainly grasped the firmest handhold." [Qur'an 31:22] And he, blessings and peace be upon him, said: "Indeed, Allah does not take away knowledge by snatching it from the people after He has given it to them." Thus, the locations of the Qur'an's address become clear with those who are arranged in the ranks of hearts according to their share of faith, Islam, and goodness, as stated by Al-Harali. And he defined 'the path' as that which includes the sustenance of the one who walks in it and the one who traverses it, in terms of grazing, watering, and similar matters. And 'the straightness' is that which is the most generous of the things intended for it. He said: It is said to be its middle and its best.
