Commentary
And when He clarified what was upon them regarding what they had committed of harm, He followed it with what is in turning away from it of benefits. He said: ﴿And if only they had believed﴾ meaning: in what they were called to from this Qur'an, and in believing that the doer of everything is indeed Allah, not magic. ﴿And feared﴾ what undermines faith from standing with what was true and was abrogated from the Torah, thus becoming false, and from engaging in what was not true originally from magic, they would have been rewarded with better than what they left behind. For indeed, whoever leaves something, Allah compensates him with better than it. This is the answer, but He expressed it in a way that implies permanence, continuity, and honor, among other things that the minds cannot grasp from the eloquence of the Qur'an. He said: ﴿Surely, there is a reward﴾, a form of the word for reward, which is the recompense of good. In the form, there is an indication of elevation and stability, as stated by al-Harali. He honored it with His saying: ﴿from Allah﴾, who possesses all attributes of perfection, and He increased its honor with His saying: ﴿better﴾ while omitting the one preferred over it. Al-Harali said: He equated this reward with the content of the message in that both are from Allah, honoring this reward and linking it to the high pattern of His knowledge, wisdom, and the effectiveness of His words. This reward is general for what occurs in this world and the Hereafter from the good things, among which is what Allah gives to His righteous servants from the ability to act with the beautiful names of Allah according to what their meanings provide of benefits. Among that are the reported effects, such as the Opening (Al-Fatiha) being a cure and Ayat al-Kursi being a protection from the devil, and similar benefits of the Qur'an, remembrances, and seeking blessings from the traces of the righteous and the like. Then He confirmed the news by stating that their knowledge is ignorance with His saying: ﴿If only they knew﴾ [Al-Baqarah: 102]. Al-Harali said: There is an indication of a rank of knowledge that is higher and more honorable than the rank that was diverting them from taking magic, for that rank dissuades from knowing what is evil, while this encourages attaining what is good. And in it is good news for this nation regarding what is within it of accepting this knowledge, which is the knowledge of names and the benefits of the Qur'an, that it will be a compensation for them from the knowledge of al-Simiya, which is a branch of magic. And perhaps it will be similar to that which was revealed to the two angels. The Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, said: 'Whoever acquires knowledge from the stars has acquired a branch of magic; he increases as much as he increases.'
And the reality of [UNTRANSLATED-LATIN:simiya] is a matter from the matter of Allah. It has manifested its effects in the earthly world in the form of names and wicked souls from the places of trials in the celestial realms of the stars, planets, and images. What has been revealed from it in sciences and actions, nothing of it is established with His name, glorified and exalted is He. Rather, it is a condition for its validity to be free from the name of Allah and His mention, to fulfill His right, and to turn away from the acts of worship and direct oneself to what is beneath it. Therefore, it is a disbelief that is a trial from Allah, glorified and exalted is He, for whoever He wills to lead astray with it. Until the trial of the name of [UNTRANSLATED-LATIN:simiya] is akin to the name of [UNTRANSLATED-LATIN:al-Lat] and [UNTRANSLATED-LATIN:al-Uzza] from the guidance of the name of Allah, the Almighty. And to Allah belongs the entirety of creation and command, guidance and misguidance, revealing His comprehensive and inclusive word for the opposites of pairs, the end of which is a division into two abodes: the abode of light, merciful from His name, the Almighty, the Merciful, and the abode of fire, vengeful from His name, the Compeller, the Avenger.
﴿And on the Day the Hour will be established, they will be separated﴾ [Ar-Rum: 14]
And when He, glorified is He, made from the harm in magic and similar matters, it was from the reward for whoever among this nation believed and feared Allah that the chapters of Al-Falaq and An-Nas, the two protectors, are a safeguard, nullification, and a means of catching what the magic of the sorceresses deceives. It is a permanent substitute for this nation from the staff of Musa. They are the staff of this nation that catches what the magic of the sorceresses deceives, a permanent substitute with what is in them from the comprehensive supplication for seeking refuge from the evil of Al-Falaq, from which a glance of it would cause the magic to divide. They are two means of refuge from beyond what is beyond magic and similar matters. And that is from the reward of repulsion along with what they have been given from the reward of benefit. And it is almost that no one who receives this verse for this nation would stop at a limit from attaining goodness and the faces of honors. The end.
