Commentary
Then he followed this denial with mention of the Book and the Messenger, as he did in the first denial. However, he clarified here what he concealed there, saying: ﴿And when a Messenger came to them﴾, meaning: a great one, encompassing, I called him by what the greatest name indicates in His saying: ﴿From Allah﴾, meaning: the King who has all dominion and command.
﴿Confirming what was with them﴾, for he came with a Book that is verified to be from Allah due to the miraculous nature of its composition and the confirmation of its meaning with their Book.
﴿They threw﴾, meaning: they cast away in a manner of disdain.
﴿A group of those who were given the first Book﴾,
﴿The Book of Allah﴾, the Most High King, who took a covenant from them in it on the tongue of their Prophet to follow the unlettered Prophet, the worst of the throwing away by making light of it.
﴿Behind their backs﴾ by abandoning acting upon it, even if they adorned it with gold and placed it on chairs before them. And He indicated their obstinacy with His saying: ﴿As if they do not know﴾.
