Commentary
And when this ruling encompassed both the obedient and the disobedient, and that was distressing for the people of obedience due to their feeling of humiliation in both realms, the soul was stirred to know what obedience had benefited them. The response began for that, bringing them good news with His saying: ﴿Indeed, those who have believed and done﴾ confirming their claim of faith, the good deeds ﴿He will make﴾ a realization shortly at the pledge of al-Aqabah ﴿For them is the Most Merciful﴾ who has specifically granted them pleasure after encompassing them with blessings, as a reward for their submission to Him. This was either by their choice or by their acceptance ﴿a love﴾, meaning a great love in the hearts of the servants, indicating what they have of affection; Al-Asbahani said: without any affection from them nor exposure to the means by which people gain the affections of hearts through kinship or friendship or other forms of kindness, but rather it is an invention that He began specifically for His allies with a special honor, just as He instilled in the hearts of their enemies fear and awe, in great respect for them and veneration for their status - this has ended. And the intended meaning - and Allah knows best - is that He does not place in the heart of any of His righteous servants any animosity, because love - as Imam Abu al-Hasan al-Harali said - is the absence of the desire for what is disliked. And it will come, if Allah wills, in Surah [Ar-Rum] what makes this clearer; the two Shaykhs and others narrated from Abu Huraira, may Allah be pleased with him, from the Prophet ﷺ who said: "Indeed, when Allah loves a servant, He calls Jibril and says: O Jibril! I love so-and-so, so love him. Jibril loves him, then he calls out to the inhabitants of the heavens: Indeed, Allah loves so-and-so, so love him. The inhabitants of the heavens love him, then acceptance is placed for him on earth. And indeed, when Allah dislikes a servant, He calls Jibril and says: O Jibril! I dislike so-and-so, so dislike him. Jibril dislikes him, then he calls out to the inhabitants of the heavens: Indeed, Allah dislikes so-and-so, so dislike him. The inhabitants of the heavens dislike him, then enmity is placed for him on earth."
