Commentary
And when it was clarified that neither wealth nor children can honor him, and that the benefit of idols is certainly less than that, he negated it with his saying: ﴿No﴾ with the tool of deterrence. This is because that is a request for honor from the source of humiliation, from the servants, for whoever seeks honor for them is indeed humiliated. They are inherently in need, and whoever seeks honor for the worldly life seeks it from the servants without a doubt. Thus, he is compelled, certainly, to abandon the truth and follow falsehood, and the consequence of his matter is humiliation, even if it takes a long time. For indeed, Allah, the Exalted, may grant respite to the forsaken until he reaches the point of deserving the garment of humiliation. Then He clarified that, glorified and exalted is He, by what will happen to them on the Day of Resurrection, saying: ﴿They will disbelieve﴾ meaning the deities, with a promise that there is no contradiction in it, even if the time is long, ﴿in their worship of us﴾ meaning the polytheists. They will say to them: ﴿What were you worshiping?﴾ [Yunus: 28] ﴿When those who were followed disown those who followed﴾ [Al-Baqarah: 166] ﴿and they will be against them﴾ meaning the disbelievers; and he unified the reference to indicate the agreement of the word, so that they, due to their extreme solidarity, are like one thing. He said: ﴿As enemies﴾ meaning they will cause them humiliation. And likewise, the disbelievers do with their partners, and they will say: ﴿By Allah, our Lord, we were not polytheists﴾ [Al-An'am: 23]. Thus, enmity will arise between them, as Allah, the Exalted, said: ﴿Then on the Day of Resurrection, some of you will disbelieve in others and some of you will curse others﴾ [Al-Ankabut: 25].
