Commentary

And when this was due to it being a gradual leading into more misguidance, He responded with His saying, in addition to what has preceded in His decree [as a cause for His saying: ﴿Let him extend﴾ [Maryam: 75], which means: He will increase him in misguidance, or in relation to the place of ﴿Let him extend﴾ [Maryam: 75]]: ﴿And Allah increases﴾. And He expressed it with the proper name as an indication of His manifestation to them with all the highest attributes so that they may truly know Him. ﴿Those who are guided have guidance﴾ instead of what He has withheld from them [and prevented them -] of the worldly matters due to their honor with Him from what He has spread for the misguided due to their insignificance to Him. Thus, the verse is from the intertwining: He mentioned the abundance with the extension for the misguided first as evidence for the removal of the constriction by the prevention for the guided second, and the increase of guidance second as evidence for the removal of the increase of misguidance first -] and indicated that just as He has forsaken those with provision, He has granted these success in good deeds, with the scarcity of wealth. So He said: ﴿And the lasting ones﴾. Then He described them as a precaution against the actions of the people of misguidance with His saying: ﴿The righteous﴾, meaning from the acts of obedience and the knowledge that has been made clear for them, which illuminated the hearts and was safe from the nullification of sins, thus leading to the Knower of the unseen. ﴿Better with your Lord﴾ than what He has granted the disbelievers and extended to them - based on the estimation of the descent to call it good. And the addition of the Lord to him ﷺ is an indication that He nurtures it in a way that reaches the utmost of what pleases Him in all of His followers. Then He clarified the aspect of the goodness of this with His saying: ﴿A reward﴾, meaning from the aspect of reward. ﴿And better in return﴾, meaning from the aspect of the outcome on the Day of Regret, which is like what preceded it, or according to their saying: summer is hotter than winter, meaning that in its heat it is more intense than in its cold. So the disbelievers are returned to loss and annihilation, while the believers are returned to profit and permanence.
