Commentary
So it is as if it were said: What is said to them? He said: "Say". This is a response to them and a cutting off of their excuses and a tearing down of their doubts: This that you have boasted of does not indicate good condition in the Hereafter, but rather the opposite. His custom, glorified and exalted is He, has been that "Whoever is in misguidance" like you, firmly established, He has spread for him in this world and made his life pleasant in its outward condition, and he has enjoyed various pleasures. This indicates that this does not hardly fail to apply to anyone who has ruled by obligating the poverty of the Jews with the letter of the command, signaling the existence of it and the existence of the commanded one who complies with His saying: "Let him extend". And he indicated to them the adornment of the attribute of goodness with His saying: "To Him belongs the Most Merciful". This means the general bestowal of "extension" in this world by the spreading of effects, and the abundance in dwellings, and the length of lives, and spending it in what is enjoyed from the great burdens. Thus, the Mighty, the Compeller increases him in that misguidance. So how great is the loss, and destruction, and ruin for one who has insight. And we continue to extend for him a gradual leading until it is realized that they will take with the tool of realization. He said: "When they see". This means everyone who disbelieves in Allah with their eyes, even if they claim that they support one another and help one another. And for this reason, He gathered by considering the meaning: "What they are promised" from Allah, "Either the punishment" in this world by the hands of the believers or others, or in the Barzakh, "or the Hour" which they deny, and they are averse to preparing for it. And nothing resembles its horrors, and its disgrace, and its punishment.
And when the answer was: They knew that their place is the worst of places, and that their army is the weakest of armies, He expressed it with His saying as a threat: "So they will know" when they see that "Who is worse in place". This means in terms of the place that the station was met with, "and weaker in army". They are either the believers or them, meaning weaker in terms of the army that is referred to as the gathering, because the intent is those in it. And it is as if He expressed it with the army because their intent is to overpower, and not everyone in the gathering is a fighter.
