Commentary
And when this is worthy of acceptance for the establishment of evidence on the completeness of the ability of its speaker, and his being free from the deficiency of speech, due to his innocence from the attributes of deficiency, he said, marveling at the one who denies it, adding to his saying, "And man says" [Maryam: 66], "And when Our verses are recited to them" meaning the people, from any reciter, "Our verses" while they are "clear" with no doubt in them, by being definitive or ambiguous, which have been followed by clarification with the definitive, or by the clarification of the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, so it is a state that is confirming or revealing. "Those who disbelieved" in the clear verses of their Lord, out of ignorance from them and looking at the apparent life of this world, which is their limit of knowledge, "for those who believed" meaning for their sake or facing them, turning away from the inference by the verses, and the aspects of their clear indications, by turning to this weak doubt - which is boasting of abundance in this world - from their saying, "Which of the two groups" are we - with what we have of abundance, or you - with what you have of the harshness of living and the wretchedness of condition, "better in position" meaning place of standing or residence - according to the reading of Ibn Kathir with the 'm' being pronounced and the majority with it being opened: "And better in gathering" as a congregation and as a speaker, considering what is in each of the men, and what they have of clothing and wealth, and they make that trial of bounty and kindness a proof of the pleasure of the Most Merciful, while denying and being ungrateful, and they are heedless that in that - along with the denial of resurrection - is a denial of what they witness from us of the ability to punish by bringing about calamities, and taking away blessings, and if We had willed, We could have destroyed them and taken away all that they boast of.
