Commentary
And when what is in the form of a question has preceded, He followed it with what removes any misconceptions that may arise from it. He said: "Then, by Our might! We certainly know more than any scholar about those who are more deserving of it, both in their outward appearances and their inner selves, of Hellfire. We are more deserving of it than those who are more deserving of every level of its depths from all of creation, whether they are the taken ones or others. So it should not be thought that we place anyone in a level or category other than their rightful one." And He connected these phrases with a tool of distance, coupled with the pronoun of greatness, due to the distance of their ranks and their elevation in the highest peaks and their ascension, to emphasize the status and magnify the matter for their distancing from it. It is possible that the three letters are for chronological arrangement, which is clear in the first two, and as for the third, it is because knowledge is a metaphor for punishment. For whoever knows the sin of his enemy—while he is capable—will punish him. So it is as if it is said: "We will certainly punish each of them in the Fire according to what they deserve, for We know their priority in that."
