Commentary

Then he clarified it by his saying: ﴿Gardens of Eternity﴾ meaning a place of residence from which there is no departure in any way. ﴿Which the Most Merciful has promised﴾ encompassing blessings. ﴿To His servants﴾ whom He is more merciful to than a mother to her child; and He expressed them with the description of servitude to indicate compassion. This promise is certain ﴿in the unseen﴾ which they have no knowledge of except through us. So they believed in it and thus they deserved that by His grace, glorified and exalted is He, for their faith in the unseen.

And since it is customary for people to consider that promises of the unseen may not occur, He clarified that His promise is not like that by saying: ﴿Indeed, it was﴾ meaning it is a past established custom. ﴿His promise is certainly coming﴾ meaning it is intended to be fulfilled, so it must occur. It is like His saying, the Most High: ﴿If the promise of our Lord is to be fulfilled﴾ [Al-Isra: 108].
