Commentary

And when Ismail, blessings and peace be upon him, was the one who assisted his father Ibrahim, blessings and peace be upon him, in building the House, which was among the actions by which Allah preserved his mention and made his matter famous. He was in agreement with Musa, blessings and peace be upon him, in the appearance of the sign of water, by which is the life of everything, even though the sign of Musa, blessings and peace be upon him, ended with his passing. His sign remains until Allah inherits the earth and those upon it. It was the cause of his life, and its water, by His blessing, is the best of the waters of the earth. And He, glorified and exalted is He, made the sign of the water that He showed him a means of protecting him from the jinn, humans, beasts, and all corruptors. This indicates that He, glorified and exalted is He, gives life through his son Muhammad, blessings and peace be upon him, whom He nourished with that water and raised near that House until He chose him with His message. The Jews envied him and commanded to be obstinate against him, saying that he would not live without it, and make him the axis of existence, just as He specifically chose him from among the family of Ibrahim, blessings and peace be upon him, with the House, which is likewise the axis of existence. And He cures him from the disease of ignorance and enriches him from bitter poverty, just as He made the water of Zamzam food for taste and a cure for sickness. And he, blessings and peace be upon him, was the last to elevate their status and the greatest in raising their mention. He followed his mention with that, saying: "And mention in the Book your closest father, Ismail, the son of Ibrahim, blessings be upon them, whom they acknowledge his prophethood and are proud of his message and fatherhood." Thus, their reasoning in denying your prophethood, claiming that you are from humans, is invalid. Then he explained his mention and the highlighting of his status by saying, indicating the difficulty of fulfilling the affirmation: "Indeed, he was of a nature and disposition that was truthful in his promise to Allah and others, due to Allah's assistance to him in that, because he does not make a promise except that it is accompanied by an exception, as he said to his father when he informed him of the matter of his slaughter: "You will find me, if Allah wills, among the patient." [As-Saffat: 102] [So be my father likewise -] "And do not say of anything, 'Indeed, I will do that tomorrow,' [Al-Kahf: 23] "Except that Allah wills." [Al-Kahf: 24] And He specifically praised him with that, even though all the prophets are likewise, due to the story of the slaughter, so it does not necessitate his preference. "And he was a Messenger, a Prophet," whom Allah informed of His news and sent him to his people, Jurhum, as stated by Al-Asbahani. And he brought the people of the wilderness the religion of his father Ibrahim, blessings and peace be upon them, which Allah revived with the light of faith arising from the spirit of knowledge. And he described him with the message, in addition to the description of his brother Ishaq, blessings and peace be upon them. And the secret of the combination of the two descriptions is advanced in the matter of Musa, blessings and peace be upon him. In Sahih Muslim and Jami' at-Tirmidhi, from Wathilah ibn al-Asqa', may Allah be pleased with him, "Indeed, Allah chose Kinana from the descendants of Ismail, blessings and peace be upon him." And in the narration of Tirmidhi, "Indeed, Allah chose Ismail from the descendants of Ibrahim."
